Ghosts are a metaphor for horror, but what makes them a metaphor that continues to appear in various art forms is their versatility. Video games use ghosts in many ways. Some serve only for aesthetic purposes, while some appear as terrifying creatures.
This list aims to memorably show ghosts that are some of the most terrifying in their own unique way, but the first few are those that frighten younger audiences or when they think deeply. The list will get considerably more intimidating as it progresses.
10/10 og mansion luigi 3
Ug is not traditionally scary like other ghosts that players may encounter in other games. That’s because it’s a ghost from Luigi’s Mansion 3. The game can only get really scary before it gets a T rating, so Nintendo has stayed in the realm of making its game accessible to everyone.
None of this detracts from the fact that Ug is one of the most terrifying bosses in the game. His T-rex form is menacing, but players get a closer look at the scary little cave ghost Ug when he comes out of this form and shows his true self.
9/10 Shadow of the Hero – The Legend of Zelda: Princess of Twilight
This ghost is existentially terrifying more than anything else, although some young people may find it frightening. The shadow of the hero in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is actually a dead alternate timeline, who has passed through time to help his descendants become a hero. The Hero’s Shade is useful, but a reminder of Link’s inevitable demise.
The Hero’s Shade isn’t the most terrifying ghost on the list but it’s one of the most interesting because it’s the link he never remembered due to the heroic deeds he accomplished in his timeline.
The Sorrow in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater feels like the player has been pulled out of the action-packed stealth game and thrown into a survival horror mode. As some later games let players know, Grief can’t be hurt because he’s already dead.
Grief can summon the souls of all soldiers killed by Snake, so this fight can get tough as players keep killing. Sadness is a frightening and mysterious figure that terrified the many who were caught up in his fight after dark.
7/10 Ghost – Dark Souls
The Ghost Enemy in Dark Souls is an enemy that surprises the player with its attacks while frightening it at the same time. Much thought has been given to this character to provide players with the enemy to be killed strategically. If players run into the ruins of New Lando unprepared, these ghosts will drive them out.
Players must also be cursed to do some damage to the ghost. They can also pass through and attack walls, so players need to be on the lookout for how far they can get.
6/10 Chief – Ghostbusters: The Video Game
The boss design is the scariest that the game has to offer although Ghostbusters: The Video Game plays more like an action-adventure game. However, this boss feels like he belongs in the Outlast series with its style. The ghost is a huge man who wears giant robes that make him look like a cult leader.
His fight will make him a formidable opponent, making him a formidable opponent. He will perform various attacks based on what appears to be spirits being summoned to deal damage, and players will also have to manage waves of enemies while defeating him.
5/10 Soul – dead by day
The Spirit in Dead By Daylight feels like something players can expect in their nightmares or a random sleep paralysis episode. The spirit is a girl known by the name of Rin Yamaoka who was killed by her father when he lost his mind. After being brutally murdered, she was fueled by rage and made a pact in a whispered darkness.
Her strength makes her feel like a real ghost because she can walk in stages. In this case, you won’t be able to see the players, but they are moving fast and they won’t be able to see them. Her entire gameplay is opposing force and fun to get the hang of.
4/10 Revenant- Phasmophobia
Phasmophobia has many types of ghosts that players have to deal with, but the Revenant is the greatest of the group of ghosts in the game because it is the fastest that the game has to offer. Ghost is twice as fast as players, so there aren’t many ways to defend against it.
The fact that the game offers different ghost models from Revenant is what makes this character so terrifying.
3/10 Hanging Devil – Little Hope
The Hanged Demon is The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope’s scariest boss in the story because of all the different elements that follow this ghost. The ghost reminds us of a woman who was hanged as a rotting corpse. The scene in which you are chasing the players is one of the best scenes in the game.
The way she kills players using her long tongue as a noose is also disgustingly horrific. The death animation is not one for those who get nauseous easily as it causes panic.
2/10 Alma Wade – Fear 2
Alma Wade in FEAR 2 is one of the strangest ghosts on this list for reasons that will be touched upon shortly. It introduces some basic fears into the game. However, she ends up experimenting with PG-13 with the game’s main character while also transforming into a malnourished ghost monster. Perhaps one of the most disturbing things in the game, if not in the series.
Alma Wade does a good job of being the series’ main antagonist in all of the FEAR games, but she has a much more shocking and nasty presence in FEAR 2.
1/10 Sai Kurosawa – Deadly Frame 2: The Vermilion Butterfly
Sae Kurosawa in Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is a ghost that players will not want to be around if they are brave enough to play this game at night. Each meeting with her will remind the players of her shocking laughter. The boss fight is full of noise as its laughter will echo, and the music will be louder.
The game does a great job with the combat sound design and the use of combat to show her terrifying smile as the players fight against her. She also tells the disgusting story of her death as her battle continues.
