WWE’s Gunther retains the Intercontinental title with some help at SmackDown’s season premiere

The main event of tonight’s WWE SmackDown season premiere was a much-anticipated rematch for the Intercontinental Championship between Gunther and Sheamus, and it was a physical match just like their previous fight. Sheamus’ chest tore by the end of the match, but despite the physical losses, he managed to get Gunther to click. The only problem was that the referee said he wasn’t a faucet, he stole the victory from Sheamus and cleared the way for Gunther to get some help and in pinning Sheamus and retaining his IC title.

At one point, Sheamus had Gunther on the ropes, and he was looking to grab the win by locking up the serve. He did just that, and even though Gunther fought to get to the ropes, he ended up tapping the mat. Everyone thought Sheamus had won, but then the referee crushed that win.

She said that Gunther did not eavesdrop, instead he said he was just trying to reach the ropes. Sheamus was furious and then Imperium and Brawling Brutes got engaged. This distracted the referee, giving Imperium the opportunity to throw a shillelagh to Gunther Sheamus so he could hit him with it and knock him out.

This resulted in Gunther pinning Sheamus and getting the number three, and Sheamus will undoubtedly look for payoff at Extreme Rules when the two teams face each other in a Donnybook match. It remains to be seen if Sheamus gets another chance at the Intercontinental Championship due to the controversial call in the ring, but we just have to see.
