Houston, Texas (KTRK) – A young Afro-Latino mother, writer and poet is making a difference when it comes to representing Latin culture in the literary world.

Jasmine Mendes is a Dominican-American poet and playwright, winner of numerous books for children and adults.

discovered by Arte Publico Press While reading in the library. Since then, she has published mixed memoirs and a collection of poems.

She has also authored a children’s picture book called Josefina y Sus Habichuelas, a beautiful tale of Dominican family, culture and traditions. The idea came to her when she was a young mother and teacher.

“As a teacher, I’ve worked in bilingual classes and struggled to find adequate representation for the students I’ve taught—who are similar to them—to find characters and books that represent their life experiences, and so I wanted to be a part of the change in this,” she said.

Yasmin’s latest YA memoir, Island Apart: Become Dominican American, came out this summer. She also has a poetry collection book called “City Without Change”. It definitely paves the way and opens doors for others.

Yasmine has many other projects and books to be released but at the moment she cannot announce them yet.
