Now is a particularly dark time for Guts and his allies, which is really saying something to consider Rambunctious It is famous for its dark times. After Griffith’s conquest of Elfhelm, the mystical environment of the mortal world has been struck, with its inhabitants disappearing and taking away some of the most powerful allies our heroes have ever seen. Understandably, Guts didn’t take the news very well, especially considering that Griffith and Zodd were able to kidnap Casca soon after regaining her sanity.

With the Guts’ allies worried about him, the black swordsman takes a moment to think and appears to have come to a fork in the road, as indicated by the dark hero’s inner monologue:

“All this time, when I couldn’t count on anything else, anyone else, when I had none, I still had your strength to hold on to! You were all I had!”

Guts dropping his sword in this final chapter represents a dark moment for main character Kentaro Miura, as the former mercenary spent his entire life relying on his sword when he had no family and when he could only realize his dreams in battle. As the Dragon Slayer strikes on Earth, the future of the Black Swordsman as a warrior is now called into question as Griffith continues to expand his empire through the Band of the Hawk that unites humans and messengers.
