Star Wars Eclipse promises brand new characters and environments set in the era of the Supreme Republic of Star Wars. It is also the first Star Wars game from Quantic Dream. The developer of The Detroit: Become Human Developer dropped the first cinematic trailer for the game during The Game Awards 2021, and it was amazing.
While this cinematic trailer doesn’t reveal any gameplay, it does paint a picture of an ominous force on the verge of shattering a peaceful galaxy. Story details are scarce, but we do get a few hints, including Yoda’s appearance.
Read on for the latest information on Star Wars Eclipse, including what we can expect to see from the gameplay and story.
Star Wars Eclipse: Release date speculation
Unfortunately, we don’t have confirmed information about the Star Wars Eclipse release date. No new information has come from Quantic Dream or Lucasfilm Games since the initial trailer was dropped. All we know at this point is that the game is “currently in the early stages of development,” according to an article on Star Wars website (Opens in a new tab).
This may indicate that we are at least two years away from playing the game. Rumors surrounding the game also indicate that the game’s development has taken a slow start.
Reputable leaker Tom Henderson claimed in December 2021 that Star Wars Eclipse “is believed to be at least about 3-4 years away”. Developer Quantic Dream is currently struggling to hire staff (Opens in a new tab), possibly due to the involvement of controversial studio head David Cage. The company is also reportedly having issues with existing development tools that don’t quite fit in with Eclipse.
Since we still haven’t seen any updates about a year after the initial trailer, you’d be wise not to expect anything soon.
Star Wars Eclipse: How to Play
Quantic Dream tends to create narrative-driven interactive adventure games that are light on the traditional gameplay. However, the developer may branch out for Eclipse. Developer notes (Opens in a new tab) Star Wars Eclipse is going to be an action and adventure game with multiple characters, each with their own branching possibilities. This indicates that it may get rid of the “playable movie” tag from previous Quantic Dream games.
However, the studio won’t completely switch things up. In classic Quantic Dream style, it looks like player choice will be a major component of Star Wars Eclipse. There will be many playable characters and your choices will matter, as each decision will have a huge impact on the course of the player’s story experience. Instead of focusing on one character that you build over time, you may need to control the fate of several pieces on the proverbial board.
Star Wars Eclipse: Platform Speculation
Currently, we have no information on which platforms will get Star Wars Eclipse. Most likely, it will release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, but it seems unlikely that it will launch on PS4 and Xbox One. At this point, we may see a new generation of console announced by the time we hear more about the Star Wars Eclipse platforms.
Star Wars Eclipse: Trailer
The Star Wars Eclipse cinematic trailer from The Game Awards 2021 showcases the game in the era of the High Republic. The High Republic period, not to be confused with the Old Republic, was set hundreds of years before The Skywalker Saga, and was the golden age of the Republic and the Jedi Order. Novels, comics, and even audiobooks have already explored this era, but Eclipse will be the first video game to be placed in this segment of the Star Wars timeline.
While there’s no gameplay in the trailer, there’s still plenty to dissect. Perhaps the trailer’s biggest moment is already buried in the middle when we see a little green figure staring out of the window of what looks like Jedi council chambers. A closer examination of the visual assets provided by Quantic Dream shows that this is actually Yoda standing in the council room, so we can expect at least one familiar face.
We also get a Jedi duel on a bridge, alien races in cities with an unnatural outer edge and an alien race performing some form of ritual that seems to generate an evil-looking character. Odds are, this is our first look at the game’s primary opponent.
Star Wars Eclipse: Story
Quantic Dream has promised that Star Wars Eclipse will include all-new characters and environments in this High Republic Era. The eclipse will occur at the outer edge: a somewhat lawless region of the galaxy where the Jedi and the Republic often struggle to assert control.
The High Republic has been the focus of several Star Wars comics, which have already established some canon. While Eclipse could explain these storylines, Quantic Dream’s talk of entirely new characters and never-before-seen genres suggests that this will be an entirely new story.
The movie trailer might show us some of these unfamiliar genres. We still have to figure out the origins of the game’s potential opponent, and Anomid is coming out too. These species are shown in the trailer wearing red robes with their faces completely covered. They first appeared in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and have only made a few short appearances since then.
Despite all these new characters and environments, we do get some familiar scenes in the cinematic trailer. There are a lot of Jedi to be found, including the Yoda mentioned above. Species that are an integral part of the Star Wars galaxy, such as Mon Calamari and Duros, appear in the trailer. Since Eclipse will feature a cast of multiple playable characters, we may eventually play as familiar – and unfamiliar – faces. But we’ll keep you posted as we learn more about Star Wars Eclipse.
