SpongeBob gets spooky with Junji Ito Kroos’ surprise

Spongebob Squarepants is still a major animated icon that grew out of the ranks of Nickelodeon, and while Bikini Bottom has had some Halloween specials in the past, Krusty Krab fry cook tested out his weirdest crossover yet thanks to the series’ official Twitter account. With Junji Ito still a major horror artist in the midst of a mange, and two upcoming anime adaptations have already been confirmed, everyone’s favorite Sponge has received a makeover that makes it look scarier than any we’ve seen in the past.

Spongebob Squarepants debuted in 1999, slowly rising in popularity to become one of NIckelodeon’s biggest properties. With hundreds of episodes and a handful of feature-length films under its belt, the Krusty Krab story has continued for decades, introducing us to Bikini Bottom’s undersea denizens like Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, Squidward, and countless others. SpongeBob has yet to receive an official anime itself, though fans online have taken the opportunity to imagine what a fry cook would look like if it came out from Japan instead of North America, and given how popular the animated series continues to be, we might as well get an official version Sometime down the line.

The official Spongebob Squarepants Twitter account shared a disturbing new photo of Spongebob, merging the sponge with gruesome photos of Junji Ito that first appeared from Uzumakithe story that witnessed a town that was obsessed with spirals and found itself cursed in countless terrifying ways:

Crazy Genji Ito: Japanese Tales of the Horror It will be an anthology series hitting the streaming service, including stories like The Hanging Balloons, Where The Sandman Dwells, Tomie, and many more. Tonami Uzumaki The series has been described by anime fans as being as close to Ito’s artwork as it gets despite the series being postponed indefinitely thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.
