on Friday, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power He debuted the final episode of his first season, which revealed Sauron’s secret identity (followed by SPOILERS The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Episode 8 “Shuffled”). It turns out that Halbrand (Charlie Vickers), the supposed king of the Southlands, was Sauron in disguise the whole time. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) discovers this by researching the history of the Royal Line of the Southlands, discovering that it ended 1,000 years ago. Sauron reveals himself to Galadriel, claiming to be repentant while also tempting her to join him as his queen who rules Middle-earth. Gladrill scolds Sauron, but by the time she relinquishes his influence, Sauron is gone. However, it had already provided the great Elven smith Celebrimbor with the knowledge to form the Three Rings. With the light of Valar fading, the Elves have no choice but to move forward with their plans, and so the Three Rings are created.
How do these events compare to what we know about the history of Middle-earth from the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien? Episodes of Power follow a different path but visit many of the same narrative milestones.
Sauron in the first era
According to Tolkien’s writings, Sauron served as Morgoth’s lieutenant during most of the First Age. That ended when Elves defeated Sauron on Werewolves Island.
After his defeat, Sauron disappeared for some time, likely to avoid Morgoth’s disappointing wrath. He only appeared again after defeating his master.
repentant Sauron
When Sauron appeared, he pleaded for mercy from the Elvish forces who had defeated Morgoth, claiming that he regretted his actions. However, he did not regret his actions enough to face judgment and punishment for his actions, and instead fled to hide in Middle-earth. It is unclear whether his remorse is sincere at all, as it is not clear in rings of strength. We asked writer Jennifer Hutchison what fans have to do about Halbrand’s claim that he’s trying to fix things.
“I think we really wanted to feel open to interpretation, very specifically, because we were going through the season and building his character and his story,” she said. “Because if I went back, we wanted him to be internally consistent with both Halbrand and Sauron. And even in the room, we’d go back and forth. Is he honest? Is that part of the manipulation? And I think it’s part of the beauty of a character like Sauron and that attitude is that it’s really how you read it.” And I’d like fans to be able to give their own interpretation of it. Obviously, I think the actor has his own. We all have our own feeling. Is it real or not? And I think that’s a bit of his beauty because it can go either way.”
Sauron in disguise
Sauron appeared again only to put his plan for the One Ring into action. Upon his reappearance, he took on the appearance of Anatar, Lord of Gifts, and sought to corrupt the elves in his service. Tolkien’s writings find that Sauron befriends Celebrimbor and teaches him how to make magical rings, as happens in rings of strength.
Whether or not we will see Annatar in character rings of strength At some point it is still to be seen. Currently, Sauron’s character Halbrand appears to be taking its place, and used to insert himself into the Elves’ affairs and influence them toward the creation of The Three Rings. Halbrand shares his knowledge of bullion with Celebrimbor and calls it a “gift,” which seems to be a reference to the “Lord of Gifts” for Tolkien fans in the audience.
forging rings
While Sauron focuses his efforts first on the Elves, the three rings are the last to be falsified in Tolkien’s writings. Celebrembure creates the three only after Sauron (as Anatar) has left to bring the Seven Dwarves and the Nine Men. Thus, they were free from Sauron’s corrupting influence, although they were still linked in one circle through the arts taught by the Dark Lord Celebrimbur. Once the elves discover Sauron’s influence on them, they remove the three and send them into hiding, which leads to a war with Sauron. After defeating Sauron at the end of the Second Age, the Elves wore the Three Rings again during the Third Age to preserve their forests.
The Rings of Power go in a different direction, presenting all three as forged first, possibly as prototypes for other upcoming rings. We don’t know if The Rings of Power will treat the three rings differently than the other 16, either because Sauron left Eregion before forging it or because it was a test. However, as Hutchison told us, “I think so [Season 1] The story, really, was all about the three episodes. All I will say is that there are more rings to be made.”
Sauron in Mordor
Sauron in rings of strength It ends where he begins to say Tolkien: Mordor. In the books, by the time Anatar began presenting his gifts, Sauron had settled in Mordor and had begun to muster armies.
But rings of strengthSeason one served, in part, as the origin story of Mordor, which came into being through the efforts of Adar and the Orcs. They did this by releasing the volcano that would eventually be known as Mount Doom, as Sauron would form the one ring. rings of strengthThe second season will likely see Sauron wresting control of Mordor from Adar. “Well, leaving the state of the world as it is — like you said, Adar and his goblins created Mordor; Sauron has peaked in height — these are clearly the storylines that are left open at the end of the season,” Hutchison said in our interview. “So I can say that it is safe to assume that there will be more explorations in this world as we go forward.”
