Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro Max improves on its predecessor in many ways, from processing power to cameras to a Dynamic Island feature that replaces the notch. But don’t include durability in this list of improvements.
Like the iPhone 13 Pro before it, the iPhone 14 Pro Max crashed the first time it fell on its back and front during Drop test conducted by Allstate Protection Plans (Opens in a new tab). Apple’s best iPhone also had damage to its corners, buttons, and camera housing when it was dropped on the stairs.
Allstate, which conducts these drop tests as part of promoting insurance plans it offers for devices such as the iPhone, has tested the iPhone 14 Plus. Apple’s other 6.7-inch phone did better when it was dropped from the bottom of the stairs, suffering from jagged corners and roughness on its aluminum frame. But in the face and back drop tests, the iPhone 14 Plus also suffered damage in the first drop.

A year ago, Allstate ran the same 6-foot drop tests on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. In those tests, the Pro model suffered damage in its first drop as the iPhone 14 Pro Max this year.
The iPhone 13 actually took two drops to suffer cracks in the downward-facing drop test while not cracking in the back drop test until the third drop. These results were better than what Allstate saw with the iPhone 14 Plus this time around.

Here’s a closer look at how the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Plus performed in Allstate’s drop tests.
face drop: Both phones were dropped from a height of 6 feet on the pavement with their screens facing down. After a single drop, the iPhone 14 Pro Max suffered from circular cracks and a shattered screen. The iPhone 14 Plus suffered from its own bolt cracks, along with raised glass and broken corners.
Regressive drop: When phones are flipped and dropped from 6 feet again, the back of the iPhone 14 Pro Max shattered after a single drop with high, loose glass. One of the rear camera lenses was damaged, and the camera housing was damaged. Similarly, a single drop of the iPhone 14 Plus resulted in cracks in the target point, raised and loose glass, and damage to the camera housing.
Drop side stairs: The iPhone 14 Plus did better here, with wet corners and roughened aluminum after stumbling on some stone steps. The iPhone 14 Pro Max also suffered from jagged corners as well as dented buttons, a damaged camera housing and a shattered back.
