End of Halloween director Corey Cunningham explains the Twist

Warning: This story contains spoilers for the end of Halloween. Last Halloween It was the end of the classic characters Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Michael Myers (James Judd Courtney), but it was the beginning of a new character. Nearly 45 years after first chasing the figure through the streets of Haddonfield, Illinois, a new evil has emerged: copycat killer Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell). A babysitter who becomes an outcast in town after a child accidentally dies under his watch, a corrupted Corrie is touched by evil – and commits most of the murders in finish. Although Corey doesn’t survive in the end finishMost of the movie’s screen time is spent passing the torch on to the second generation of Michael Myers.

“I wanted to get a new perspective on Myers, Laurie Strode, and family, and I wanted to introduce a new central character to be a pivotal exploration of those characters and the city,” said director and co-writer David Gordon Green. EW. “We’ve seen the story of a stalker, we’ve seen a lot of the ways the trauma affected Laurie Strode, but I really wanted to see how that affected the city.”

Three years after the death of the child – and four years after Michael’s return on Halloween night 2018, and dozens killed between 2018 Halloween and 2021 Halloween kills – Cory’s painful background is brought to the fore in his relationship with Laurie’s granddaughter, Allison (Andy Maticek).

Green explored Haddonfield’s trauma by “bringing a new personality to Corey Cunningham, discovering first his immediate traumas in our cold openness, then how it affects him, and then how an encounter with our unwavering evil can become a kind of contagious thing. It is a study of the contagiousness of these negative entities present in Our lives. If it’s not checked, it spreads. If we can wrap our heads around it, and be our hero, we might have a chance fight.”

Is Corey the new Michael Myers?

After his confrontation with sewer-living Michael Myers, Corrie snails damaged and commits his own killing spree: first in a scarecrow mask, then while wearing a Michael shape mask. As the second form, he brutally murders his arrogant mother (Joan Barron), a smart-mouthed radio DJ (Kerawn Harris), and a gang of high school bullies.

Halloween kills It was a very charged version of Michael Myers, but it was all within his consistent personality,” Green explained. One of the things I wanted to explore is someone who emulates this [acts] Of violence, but a messy one, and doesn’t know how to do it well, so instead of cutting the throat, he’s got a key, and he desperately presses it into a man’s throat. this thing Halloween Movies don’t do that because it’s not Michael Myers in character, but I wanted that midnight movie that’s crazy.”

The director added, “One of the exciting things about bringing Cory’s character here is that I can do the violence of the frontier camp to scratch that itch from the things I love about some of the ’80s movies that I really respond to.”
