Paul Newman was ‘too insecure’ and ‘always worried’ – star ‘sad’ because of his career | movies | entertainment

Paul Newman was one of the Hollywood movie giants of the 1960s and ’70s and well before his death in 2008 at the age of 83, he recorded hours of incredibly honest reflections about his life long left in his basement laundry room for years. The star may have given up turning mountains of content into a memoir when he became overwhelmed by the amount of material out there, but it’s now edited into one that’s released next week. The result is an incredibly deep and revealing dive into the highs, lows, and insecurities of a man seeking to dispel the myths about his life.

The youngest of Paul’s five daughters is Clea Newman Söderland, her mother is Joanne Woodward.

Reading the manuscripts of her father’s confessions telling of his true feelings, she confesses that she found it all “too raw” as discoveries about him have surfaced that she had never known.

Speaking to the BBC, the 57-year-old said: “He was very insecure… I struggled to understand how I didn’t know how he could see himself so differently from how his children and family felt about him, because he seemed to be so confident. Of everything. I knew he had never felt as good about his work as anyone else, but I think I was surprised at how harsh his criticism of himself was.”

In his own words in Paul Newman: The Extraordinary Life Of An Ordinary Man – A Memoir, the late star admitted he was “always worried” and struggled with feelings of “not being good enough.”

The handsome star was also haunted by how much more his success has to do with being good looking than talented as an actor.

He admitted, “It’s hard for someone like me, who has always felt like sinking into his pit, that his success comes simply from being lucky enough to be born looking a certain way.” His daughter said he wanted to be treated more.

Gathers added, “What he recorded, and what he wrote in essence, was honest and revealing. He showed this extraordinary arc, a man who was so flawed in his early life and as a young man, but as he got older, he turned into the Paul Newman we want him to be.”

His daughter admitted that in recent decades her father “worked hard on himself” and “felt much better about himself as he got older”.
