WWE’s Braun Breaker beats the odds to retain the NXT title at Halloween Havoc

It’s finally time for the main event of the WWE NXT Halloween Havoc, which will be a triple threat match for the NXT Championship between Champion Bron Breakker and contenders Ilja Dragunov and JD McDonagh. After the KO Show segment during this week’s NXT, it was clear that Breakker and Dragunov had walked out of McDonagh, often looking to combine forces and get him to pay. But McDonagh would get a payoff, costing Dragunov the match at one point by holding the referee’s hand before the three count. This led to Breaker hitting a spear on Dragunov and retaining his NXT Championship, and while a potential Austin Theory Money idea was raised in the bank, he was nowhere to be found.

Dragunov got the first hit and then Breakker wanted to get in, but both Breakker and Dragunov punched McDonagh so they shut the horns long enough for McDonagh to ambush them and bring them down with a series of attack. McDonagh would continue to cause problems for Dragunov, and even when Breakker got back into the mix, McDonagh kept him away and remained in control.

Breakker returned and McDonagh and Dragunov scored for control for the first time in the match, but Dragunov quickly stopped. Breaker wrestled him again when he grabbed Dragunov and hit him on the mat, then after building some momentum from the ropes, knocked Dragunov down onto the mat using his shoulder. McDonagh tried to hit Breakker on his blind side but he hit back, knocking JD out of the ring.

Breakker hit Dragunov down in the cover but McDonagh got in, broke it and then went straight out of the ring, making that the second time he attacked and then got out of the way. Bricker lifted Dragunov but he blocked the sleeper and then hit Bricker with elbow strikes. Dragunov took control for a bit but then again McDonagh was there to try to screw things up, but Dragunov shot JD at Breaker in the corner and climbed to the top. Then he hit a kick from the far side of the ring on both of them.

Breaker and Dragunov had their eyes on each other a little, and after a certain exchange the crowd applauded, as did McDonagh in the ring. Objecting to McDonagh’s mockery, Breaker and Dragunov reunite to send him by air and then sail over ropes to the land below.

Then back to one-on-one, Dragunov was looking to gain an advantage with the clotheslines, but Bricker would win that fight, knocking out Elijah and then lifting him up, but a header from McDonagh brought everyone down. Breaker was up front with JD, then punched Frakensteiner in the Powerbomb, sending McDonagh to Dragunov and hitting both of them.

Dragunov was hitting big chops and hitting both of his opponents, but then the Breakker collided with Dragunov, sending both of them out of the ring. McDonagh followed with one hit and then another for Dragunov, ending the sequence with a jump from the arena to bring down both opponents. Dragunov would go for two covers on Breakker but was kicked out on both, then McDonagh hit the 450 and go for cover on Ilja and then one on Breakker, but again, both were kicked out.

McDonagh hits Breaker and then goes for another cover, but Breakker is fired again. McDonagh turned his focus to Dragunov and hit him with forearm strikes, but Dragunov hit two German suplexes, only to be picked up by Breaker and hit the third. Breakker dropped Dragunov off the top rope and then picked him up and slammed him, but McDonagh threw Breakker out of the ring and went for cover instead, kicking Dragunov at the last minute.

Breakker was on his feet again and chased after McDonagh, sending him flying off the ring. He charged with a spear but Dragunov fended off and climbed to the top. He hit a guard and then punched his attacker, hitting him and going for cover, but while the referee was going for the count of three, McDonagh grabbed the referee’s hand. They exchanged strikes and then clashed from the outside, and McDonagh won that exchange. Then McDonagh put Dragunov’s foot on the steel steps and stepped on them before grabbing the chair. Then Dragunov left in the air and called a headshot, then rolled into the ring.

Dragunov and Breakker exchanged punches in the center of the ring, and both stars went to whatever gas was left in the tank with kicks, superplexes and blows. Dragunov went to finish but Breakker grabbed him with a bayonet and went for the cover, and that was it, with Breakker retaining his NXT Championship.
