Loki won’t be the only Disney Plus lord. Doctor Who is about to come to Disney Plus, in a huge deal for the streaming service (a blow to BBC America, among others). But it won’t go to every Disney Plus release. Yes, the new Dr. Ncuti Gatwa will debut in a new location – in one of the best streaming services.
Specifically, the deal brings upcoming (and not previous) Doctor Who seasons to Disney Plus in the US and anywhere else Disney Plus is located – outside of the UK and Ireland. This is the latest content upside down for Disney Plus, following its acquisition of the live stream Dancing with the Stars (previously on ABC). Disney’s move is a smart move, as it makes sure that it debuts blockbuster content outside of only new Marvel and Star Wars shows.
Those in the UK and Ireland will still be able to get Doctor Who on the BBC when the series returns in November 2023. All indications are that Disney Plus will get Doctor Who on the same BBC date. If the series premiered at the same time (which is less likely) it would be better for social media, as fans would watch the show together in real time.
Returning showrunner Russell T Davis (who masterminded the 2005 revival) spoke to the news in a Disney Plus press release, saying, “I love this show, and it’s the best of both worlds – with the vision and joy of BBC and Disney+ together, we can launch TARDIS across the world.” world, and reaching a new generation of fans while steadily maintaining our traditional home on BBC UK.”
And yes, Davis’ remark about “reaching out to a new generation of fans” is very important. While BBC America has the best cable TV alternatives including Sling TV, linear cable TV is not quite the future.
There’s more to be said about the upcoming Doctor Who seasons, But first, a spoiler warning for the latest The power of the doctor Special!
Ncuti Gatwa is not the only doctor to come
While many expected sex education star Ncuti Gatwa to play the 14th Doctor, in reality he will be the 15th Doctor. When Doctor Judy Whitaker recreated Number 13, Doctor Who. He took the form of David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor – now the 14th.
It has since been revealed that Tennant and Catherine Tate will reprise their roles for three Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials – coming in November 2023.
And, as we’ve seen in the footage above, the old doctor, now the new doctor, is as confused as you may be. The clip also showed Doctor Ncuti Gatwa asking someone to tell him “what the hell is going on here”.
