Are you buying something and it arrived broken? Netflix with ads is only that now for multiple streaming devices. The new low of $6.99 per month is down today (November 3), and we tried it out for ourselves.
Specifically, we tested it on the new Apple TV 4K (2022) after seeing a file 9to5Mac (Opens in a new tab) The report said that the newly introduced Netfix Basic with ads has already been cracked on Apple TV. Then we saw the following error message: “Error: This device is not supported on your plan, but we are working on it. Currently, you can stream here by changing your plan online. Code: 3-0.”
They are working on it? Hilarious, isn’t it? Well, if Netflix with ads was going to show up on any device, we wouldn’t be entirely surprised that it cost $179 until this latest model came out.
But then we dug a little deeper. Apple TV isn’t the only device that doesn’t work on it.
Netflix app for Windows? Netflix (Opens in a new tab) He says this is not supported yet, although we think the web browser version should suffice?
The biggest problem with supported devices is that Netflix with ads does not work on Google Chromecast (3rd generation) or Chromecast Ultra. Chromecast with Google TV. Google says “To cast Netflix to Chromecast or Chromecast Ultra, you’ll need to upgrade your Netflix plan to Basic, Standard, or Premium.”
We hope this issue will be resolved soon.
Netflix with ads also doesn’t work on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices running iOS 14 – only those running iOS 15 or later. However, Apple does not provide security updates for iOS 14, so this is less surprising. Netflix also says “Netflix Basic with ads is only supported on devices running Android version 7 or later.” This is less important, as this update was released in 2016.
Analysis: Who do you serve Netflix ads for?
Netflix with ads is an odd proposition, at $6.99 per month and maxing out at 720p.
This makes it great for people on a budget who don’t have a Full HD or 4K TV. But when Netflix launches that tier with ads, and cuts down on many old Chromecasts, which aren’t really old, we’re curious if they think people will buy new Chromecasts to make them work.
Because if Netflix thinks that people who want its new, less expensive hardware are also buying new ones, there’s a curious issue here. Yes, we all want lower monthly bills, but who has a new Chromecast with Google TV HD that wants to watch non-1080p content on it?
