It turns out that this strange dialect has surprising origins, with Armisen revealing that it was his inspiration SNL Son of alum Dana Carvey.

In the diagrams, Armisen leads a group of silly characters who talk almost exclusively about driving in Los Angeles (because Southern California is hard to drive). Stewart, Armisen’s character, mumbles at his words, speaks with a strange valley accent, and is generally a very goofy character. While chatting with Dana Carvey and David Spade on the podcast fly on the wall (Opens in a new tab) The comedian revealed who helped inspire the character, saying:

I saw Dana – I was with him and we did a stand up show in San Francisco – and Dana was telling me about his son. And he’s just saying, “It’s hard to get mad at him,” because I think he was pulled over or something. He makes that impression of his son and says, “No, but, no, dad, no, you don’t know,” you know? And from that, while we were trying to make a California accent, while writing the sketch, the genre emerged.
