In a Friday afternoon newscast, HBO just canceled Westworld, turning its ‘hosts’ and other residents of the mystery box drama to ‘off’ mode. This means there is no Season 5 to end it all.
The complex sci-fi drama, which has seen theme parks for the wealthy filled with AI-powered “hosts” to entertain and terrorize their guests, ends after the fourth season of Westworld, which pulled out last August. The Hollywood Reporter (Opens in a new tab) The news was reported.
Westworld was very impressed by the portal, but somewhere around the second and third season, things fell apart. The series hasn’t finished telling its maze story yet, but HBO and HBO Max are part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s empire, which is more budget-focused than before.
Since Westworld’s Ratings have fallen (Opens in a new tab) Twice – once for its third season (0.8 million average viewers for a second season – 1.6 million), and a bigger fall for its last outing (0.3 million average viewers), hopes can’t be too high. THR doesn’t note that “insiders confirm it [CEO David Zaslav’s penchant for cost-cutting] He was not a factor in that decision.”
In a statement to HBO, she declared: “Over the past four seasons, [co-creators] Lisa [Joy] And the [Jonathan Nolan] Taking viewers on a mind-boggling thrilling journey, raising the bar at every step. We are very grateful to them, along with their extremely talented cast, producers, crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot, and Warner Bros. Television. It was a pleasure to join them on this journey.”
Analysis: Is there any hope for Westworld’s conclusion?
We are not optimistic dear reader.
The only possibility we could guess to conclude would have been a feature-length Westworld movie, most likely on the service that would result in the upcoming merger of HBO Max and Discovery Plus.
Except, well, there’s actually a pattern that Max Original movies just don’t seem to do very well. When it came time for the cuts, WBD was eager to weed out Batgirl to write it off. It has already spent $90 million on it.
We imagine that it will take many years, a huge wave of fan support, and strong viewership for this kind of miracle to happen.
