Jacob Anderson, for Louis’s House of Horrors, Stay with Lestat (Exclusive)

After the brutal fifth episode, this week Interview with the vampire, “Like the angels God placed in Hell,” saw Lewis (Jacob Anderson) and Claudia (Billy Bass) trying to recover from Lestat (Sam Reid)’s brutality—and for Lewis, recovery is no small feat. Hitting Lestat left him seriously injured and dealing with some very complex trauma which, even with Claudia, is hard to handle, not to mention Lestat’s attempt to get back into the picture claiming deep remorse. It’s a very complicated situation, which Anderson called a “house of horrors” even before Lestat returns.

talk with ComicBook.comAnderson explained that for Lewis, his sadness and depression over everything that happened with Lestat has manifested in a kind of numbness, something he feels is important to show because depression and trauma can manifest in different ways for different people.

“I think when everything is still new, I think maybe he’s in such a state of exhaustion that maybe he’s in some sort of flow. I’m not sure if he can really pull all the pieces together,” Anderson said. “When we first saw him lying in his coffin, I think he was on the verge of being on a hard edge. He can’t take care of himself. Claudia rehabilitates him, supports him, feeds him, and he doesn’t look forward to the things that comfort him normally. He doesn’t read. He doesn’t walk.” Lewis is clinically depressed in that episode and moving on. I know everyone experiences depression differently, but for me, I sometimes find it apathy…but I think it’s just numbness. I think he hates that numbness.”

He continued, “But I’d say thinking early on before Lestat comes home, I think it’s about his realization that the only way for him and Claudia to be safe is if it’s just them. Their home isn’t safe anymore, and obviously I think the way to make that will come out later. In the episode, but I think at this point it feels like there’s something comfortable, safe, and secure in this rehab state they’re in. They’ve turned this horror house into some kind of nest at least for this short period of time.”

Anderson also explained that even with the house being a “house of horrors”, when Louis finally got Lestat back, it was because of the vampire’s invisible bond that’s hard to explain – and despite his abuse, he simply couldn’t leave.

“In the context of vampires, there’s this thing, the vampire bond that links these two vampires forever,” Anderson said. “It’s very hard to define the dynamic, and it’s built around love and about need and desire and maybe also fear. I, as a human, have a hard time understanding why someone survives, but then I think there’s just that thing that Lewis talks about in the episode that’s like, no There is a human equivalent. There is no way to adequately and satisfactorily express what this bond is, what it means, what it feels and what it does to your body and mind. And that obviously could be a symbol of something.”
