Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ahead!
Since Marvel Studios decided not to recast T’Challa after Chadwick Boseman’s death, we’ve learned that someone else will become Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This person, many people assumed, ended up becoming Shuri Laetitia Wright, T’Challa’s sister, who had embraced the heroic mantle to protect her people from Tenoch Huerta Namor and his forces from the underwater state of Talukan. However, after the battle ended in Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverit seemed as though Winston Duke’s M’Baku, not Shuri, would lead Wakanda forward, and now Duke explained that key moment for his Marvel character.
For those who need a refresher, in the MCU, just because one of them is Black Panther doesn’t automatically guarantee them the Wakandan throne. During the coronation ceremony, the awaited ruler must defeat any rival in a combat ritual, and in 2018’s Black Panther, we watched T’Challa emerge victorious over M’Baku. cut to end Black Panther: Wakanda ForeverShuri did not attend her coronation, instead Mbaku appeared in front of the crowd. During an extensive interview with Respected, Winston Duke asserted that in Shuri’s absence, he would indeed be King of Wakanda. As the representative explained:
While Winston Duke has not made it clear whether M’Baku is simply leading Wakanda until Shuri’s return or if he is officially the King of Wakanda, there is no return. Either way, it’s an important moment for the character, as we’ve seen how effective he is at driving Jabbari and how much he cares about his country as a whole. Sure, the reins of leadership were unconventionally handed to him, but he is now in a position to steer the people of Wakanda into a brighter future.
Will we actually see Mbaku perform his royal duties? Officially, this is unclear at the moment, and Winston Duke indicated that he was unaware of his character’s future. However, given how well-received Wakanda Forever and its stellar start at the box office is, it is likely that one day we will get to Black Panther 3. Throw in that Danai Gurira’s Okoye is said to be slated to lead Disney+’s Wakanda series, and M’Baku may appear Avengers: Kang Dynasty wow Avengers: Secret Wars (As he did in infinity war And the game over), and I would say chances are strong we’ll get at least one look at M’Baku sitting on the throne of Wakandan in the coming years.
