Climate activists in Vienna went to the Leopold Museum, where they sprayed oil on a prized Gustav Klimt painting.
The gesture is one of a series of recent initiatives aimed at prompting governments around the world to take faster action to combat the effects of climate change. Previous actions have seen tomato soup thrown at Van Gogh in London, mashed potatoes at Monet in Germany, and maple syrup spilled on Emily Carr in Vancouver.
The procedure was performed on Tuesday by the Letzte Generation, the German-based group that also performed the Monet procedure.

In similar protests, the businesses involved suffered little or no damage at all. The activists involved, from groups such as UK-based Just Stop Oil, have been clear that they do not seek to harm the artworks in the process.

Museum directors around the world have strongly decried such protests, citing the “fragility” of the targeted artworks. Institutions have also begun to take strict security measures, hoping to stop them before they happen.
