It hasn’t been 24 hours since the last big Google Pixel Fold leak, but more details have emerged about this upcoming foldable phone. according to A subscriber-only tweet from Ross Young (Opens in a new tab)The Pixel Fold displays will measure 7.57 inches on the inside and 5.78 inches on the outside.
Compare that to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, which is likely to be the Pixel Fold’s biggest competitor, which has a 7.6-inch inner screen and a 6.2-inch outer screen. The Pixel Fold appears to be a similar size when opened, but it could be. Tighter when closed. That could be good for portability, but it could also mean that the external screen is difficult to fully use, similar to previous Galaxy Z Fold models.
Young adds that both Pixel Fold screens are manufactured by Samsung Display. While this may sound odd since Samsung and Google are competitors, Samsung Display is its own company that can sell outside of Samsung, and the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, and previous phones in this series have proven they can make a reliable, resilient team. So it’s a reasonable choice for Google to use.
Finally, Young claims that a small number of displays have already been sent to Google. With the Pixel Fold currently rumored to be released in May 2023, it follows that Google will start trying to get this phone together, if only for further testing.
Other Pixel Fold rumors tell us that the phone could retail for $1,799, the same price as the Galaxy Z Fold 4. It also appears to use a Pixel 7-like design with a camera strip on the back and a 9.5MP front-facing camera. And the Pixel’s main camera is on the back, hopefully the same 50MP camera used on the Pixel 7 Pro.
We’ll be awaiting the arrival of the Pixel Fold with great anticipation, because it could finally be a worthy competitor to the Galaxy Z Fold. While there are plenty of great foldable devices out there like the Oppo Find N, they aren’t sold outside of China, leaving Samsung with the US market to itself for the time being. It will be interesting to see if the best foldable phone guide changes at all in May next year.
