I love a good margarita, but making a proper one is a pain. Fortunately, the new Partisan duet (Opens in a new tab) Show me that all of my favorite cocktails can be brewed like a Keuig coffee pod while still tasting great.
The Bartesian Duet offers more counter space and is less expensive than the original, plus it caters to customers who stick to the same or two types of liquor. I? I’m only a vodka and tequila person, so I gravitate toward martinis and margaritas. As such, I found plenty of Partisan pods to choose from.
Conversely, Long Island Iced Tea lovers won’t be satisfied with the Bartesian Duet’s liquor limit. And if you live in a household where everyone has different preferences, switching wells gets in the way of the experience. But as someone with certain tastes and a small apartment, the Duet is definitely the kind of tool I have on hand.

You can buy the capsules directly through Bartesian (with the option for discounted subscriptions), on Amazon or at Walmart. The pods cost $20 for an 8-pack, which breaks down to $2.50 per drink. Of course, this does not include alcohol.
Bartesian Duet review: Design
The Bartesian Duet contains two cans of alcohol instead of four to carry the spirits of your choice. The idea is that if you like the same type or two of alcohol for cocktails, you don’t need four active wells on a regular basis. Whenever you enter a tub, the controller will prompt you to assign it to one of five types of liquor: vodka, tequila, gin, rum, or whiskey.
Just holding two wine wells at a time makes for a smaller footprint (13.5 x 12.8 x 9.5 inches) than anything I’ve seen like this on the market. It’s perfect for a smaller apartment or area, where counter space is valuable. As a result, the Duet is easily accessible, shrinking from an actual device into little more than a tool.
In addition to the two wine wells, the duo has an aquarium. I noticed in the original Partizian book that the water clears up after a few hours. But the Duet’s tub looks more like the tub you’d find in a Keurig machine, with a full seal that keeps the water pristine for longer. Water is needed to dilute the alcohol and mixer concentrate in the pods, so I found this improvement important.
Bartesian Duet Review: How It Works
Using the Bartesian Duet was almost as easy as applying the fluids. The lip of the cap lifts up and down smoothly, showing where I need to insert the capsule. Once the capsule is inserted, the machine reads the barcode to ensure proper fluid loading and suggests the type of glass to use. For select drinks, the machine may recommend brewing in a cocktail shaker first. Although this, along with decorating, is completely optional.
Next, I decided how I wanted to make my drink. Options are regular, strong, mild, or mocktail. There are many people in my life who don’t drink alcohol, so even if I’m hosting and everyone is drinking their own drinks, they can be included in the fun.
I pressed down on the control dial to confirm my choice and mix my drink. My drink started leaking into the glass on the machine’s platform, filtering both liquor and water through the capsule. In about 10 seconds I had a cocktail – it didn’t get any better than ordering.
There is a bit of splashing depending on the cup and the ice, but I wiped those drips off easily with water and a rag. I tossed the drip mat and liquor canisters into the dishwasher after multiple uses, although a full descaling is recommended especially if you don’t fill the washer with filtered water. The cleaning process is similar to How to descale a kettle.
Bartesian Duet review: drink selection and taste
Partizian pods come in a wide variety, ranging from classic to seasonal brews. I’ve found at least a dozen options that I would order at a real bar if they were on the menu. But for the test, I’m putting the Bartesian Duet up to the challenge with my favorite drink: the margarita.
Even without the fresh citrus, the margarita tasted great. It wasn’t too sweet, yet I still got the essence of the sour mix and the treble. It’s exactly what I wanted from a margarita, though that can partly be attributed to the high-quality tequila. I like that I can fill the machine with my desired brands of liquor, because I definitely have preferences. When making them regularly, I’ll opt for a salty edge and squeeze fresh lemon. I can think of lots of little ways to spruce up your Bartesian Duet experience like cooling your glasses or adding decorations. Again, completely optional, but that’s how I see myself using the device.
I also tried The Witch’s Heart, a Halloween-themed vodka martini. It was very sweet, with notes of green apple and white grape juice. But the best part of it is that the capsule contains an edible glitter, so my drink had a sparkle. This is the kind of pizza you’ve only ever seen at a legitimate cocktail bar.
The happy hour has to end with an important caveat: The Bartesian Duet makes it a little tricky to shop for pods, as you have to watch out for the base alcoholic beverages for each mixer. Some pods, namely Long Island Iced Tea, are completely incompatible if they require more than two blenders.
Bartesian Duet review: The verdict
The Bartesian Duet is a compact cocktail machine that quickly and easily makes delicious drinks at home. They don’t have the finesse of craftsmanship you’d get from a nice pub, but I found a little decoration goes a long way.
The downside is that it can only hold two souls at a time, so there isn’t as much flexibility as with the original Bartesian, and some pods are not compatible. However, I think the Bartesian Duet is the perfect gift for a friend or family member who loves experimenting with instruments, hosting, or simply having a drink. It’s probably not something someone would buy for themselves, but I see it as a thoughtful gift that provides constant entertainment. It’ll be the talk of your next dinner party, that’s for sure.
