Rick and Morty Showrunner Explains Why Season 6 Left Rick’s Gates (EXCLUSIVE)

Rick and Morty kicked off season six with the surprising revelation that Rick Sanchez would not have any access to a working gate gun, and the showrunner behind the new season opened up about why the team decided to take them so far in the first half of the season! After Evil Morty uses all of the castle’s portal fluids to tear apart the limited central curve, it is revealed in Season 6 that Rick’s portal gun is broken as a result. But it wasn’t until the season break before the final episodes that Rick regained his use of portals.

It was an interesting decision to cap Rick’s travels through the multiverse for the first half of the season, and when ComicBook.com had the opportunity to speak with Rick and Morty Executive producer and showrunner Scott Marder about the choice to make in making it to the final episodes of Season 6 which returns Sunday, we just had to ask about the decision to remove the gates. As Marder explained, it was an intentional choice to make sure there were repercussions after the Evil Morty scheme back in Season 5.

Why did Rick and Morty remove the portals in Season 6?

“I mean the whole thing was clearly intentional,” Marder began explaining why Rick and Morty season 6 removed its gates, “We wanted to feel like there were major ramifications of what Evil Morty did in [Season 5’s finale] And we didn’t want to magically fix it easily, but we kind of felt like a great side effect of it was that it forced Rick to be with the family a little bit more, forcing them all into play. each other a little more. As it turns out, this choice opened up the kind of stories the team could tell in Season 6.

“We thought it was kind of a good idea that they picked each other up [Season 6’s premiere], and they were all taking on each other a bit more, and they didn’t have that out of the jail free card they could keep drawing like they usually do,” Marder continued. So it was all very interesting for us. I mean, space components are such an infinite kind of thing that this show has to offer as well, that they don’t seem to put us completely in a little box.”

Portals Rick returned to the series in the sixth episode of Season 6, so we’ll soon see how they turn things around when Rick and Morty Season 6 returns to Adult Swim with new episodes beginning Sunday, November 20 at 11:00 PM EST.
