CalWorks Eligibility: Can non-citizens get CalWORKs?

The combination of supply chain shortages, caused by COVID-19 lockdowns coupled with a ban on Russian oil imports, has sent prices of basic necessities like food, clothing, and utilities like gas and electricity soaring.

Individuals from low-income families have been particularly affected as this population relies heavily on social welfare programs such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Previously called Food Stamps.

One of California’s social welfare programs is CalWORKs, which aims to provide cash assistance and other services to families in need.

What is CalWORKs?

Operating in 58 counties, CalWORKs is a welfare scheme that assists low-income families by providing short-term assistance through cash payments or other services.

Who is eligible?

The program is open to any legal alien who is a resident of the United States or an eligible alien. Moreover, these individuals must be unemployed or partially unemployed and have low or very low incomes.

Finally, individuals must meet one of the following criteria:

  • You have a child who is 18 years of age or younger, or
  • be pregnant, or
  • Be 18 years of age or younger and head of household.

Are you eligible if you are not a US citizen?

As noted above, the program is open to eligible immigrants who are either permanent residents, residents granted refugee status or asylum, conditional entrants, persons granted withholding of removal or removal, Cuban/Haitian entrants, and certain victims of domestic violence. Victims of human trafficking (“T” visa applicants and holders), and those who have applied for or hold a “U” visa may also be eligible.

Filing for CalWORKs need not be afraid to report to ICE, and they can also take advantage of these benefits for their children.
