Echo 3 creator Mark Boal reveals the difficulties of filming the series in Colombia (exclusive)

The US State Department has issued dire warnings to citizens wishing to travel to Colombia, noting that “violent crimes, including armed robbery and murder, are widespread” in some specific locations, including active terrorist groups. But that hasn’t stopped film and TV productions from setting up shop there, including the new Apple TV+ series echo 3. Speaking with ComicBook.com’s Chris Killian ahead of the series premiere, series creator Mark Boal opened up about working in Columbia throughout filming. When we asked them if there was a time they worried about working in the South American country, the answer was startling.

“No, I actually mean we shot during a pandemic. So the biggest issue was the COVID precautions and making sure the crew was safe from the same thing that everybody was dealing with all over the world,” the Oscar winner confirmed. “Colombia has a reputation, you know, for having a safety issue. But we didn’t really have that. I mean we took some precautions but we didn’t have any issues on that front. It was mostly mosquitoes and COVID.”

Boal went on to explain how his decisions as showrunner for the series, and his own taste in TV storylines, developed the concept of echo 3 Episode to episode, and how Columbia helped her in that regard, too.

I’m not really into TV shows where every episode is the exact same mix of dialogue and violence and the same exact cast over and over again. So the world is kind of like in a movie, the world keeps expanding and transforming. And that was a lot of fun to work on, obviously, or maybe not so obvious, but also it was kind of a big challenge logistically. We shot the whole thing at Columbia after the pilot. The entire series takes place in Colombia, a beautiful country but also daunting when you deal with the diverse geography there. We went to the beaches. We were also in the busy city of Bogota and in the jungle itself. That was great for the camera and great looks and a personality in her own right, but it’s a tough physical environment to be in.

The first three episodes of echo 3 It will premiere on Apple TV+ on Wednesday, November 23, and new episodes will follow weekly. Luke Evans leads the cast of the series which is based on the award-winning series When Heroes Fly, written by Omri Givon and based on the eponymous novel by Prince Gutfreund. Apple TV+ describes it as follows:

Set in South America, the action-packed film follows Amber Chesborough, a brilliant young scientist who is the emotional heart of a small American family. When Amber disappears along the Colombia-Venezuela border, her brother, Bambi, and her husband, Prince — are two men with deep military experience and pasts. Complex – they struggle to find it in a multi-layered personal drama, set against the explosive backdrop of a secret war.”
