James Gunn explains why Nova was never included in Guardians of the Galaxy

Besides introducing characters like Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy It also highlights the Nova Corps, the military/police force of the planet Xander. As such, this was a good platform to show off Richard Rider, the first human to join the Nova Corps in the comics. But that didn’t happen, and nearly a decade after the Marvel movie was released, Gunn has explained why he didn’t bring Nova.

The director’s refusal to include Nova was not due to his dislike of the character, as a few years earlier James Gunn had claimed to have read three-quarters of all Nova comics published up to that point. However, during an interview with Comicbook.com Plug Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (which Disney+ subscribers will be able to watch starting November 25), Gunn explained that it’s important to him to Guardians of the Galaxy It only features one human hero, and Star Lord Chris Pratt, aka Peter Quill, has already filled that role. Jan explained:

Yes, I never had Richard Ryder on anything. He’s just a very big character and he also looks like… I didn’t want to… Right from the start, when I came aboard the Ranger, I didn’t want to have two people. I wanted to have one human so that he would be surrounded by this alien world. And then we realized little by little, all of these characters are the only one of their kind, it’s the only human being for them, you know?
