But he will eventually give up. He’s looking for a solid relationship, and he definitely feels he can have that with Gabrielle.
It seems like Reynolds couldn’t possibly fall in love with a woman without some kind of complication that might get in the way! He even recently found out Bloom had an abortion while they were togetherwhich happened several years ago. Gabrielle’s status as a traveling nurse must mean any relationship will be temporary, but the strong bond is a huge draw. Perhaps going in with an open mind will lead to a happier ending than with Lin!
Of course, there are only a limited number of episodes left from before New Amsterdam It’s over, so Reynolds may need to move on if he’s going to start an affair with Gabrielle before the end credits roll. When I asked him if he had learned anything from the relationship with Lynn that he could apply to from the get-go with Gabriel, Sims shared:
Yes, I think he did! I think he will learn to give her a chance. Indeed, when Nurse Gabrielle asks him to go for a drink together, he is hesitant. She said, “How is your love life?” And he’s like, ‘Terrible. Just not good.’ So she’s basically encouraging him to try something different. She opens it up in a different way, again, to try it. Giving a shot at romance rather than dropping the idea just because of its function is something it probably didn’t do in the early days of the show, and Gabrielle might just be the one it needs after developing over the previous four seasons. It seems unlikely that Lyn will return before the finale, and Gabrielle could help him get to a good place before the series ends.
