More on the status of the AEW Women’s Championship

AEW officially confirmed on AEW Dynamite this week that Thunder Rosa has relinquished the AEW World Women’s Championship. Not only did this make Jamie Hayter the official women’s champion, but Tony Storm’s interim reign from September to November was officially recognized as a world title. Rosa initially won the title at AEW Dynamite: St. Patrick’s Day Slam but had to surrender it before September. Everyone out Pay per view. Hayter beat Storm for the gold medal at Full Gear this past weekend thanks to a heavy tackle from Dr. Britt Baker and Rebel.

Tony Khan was asked about the temporary status of the tournament last week before that Full lunge. He explained at the time, “Thunder Rosa is a great wrestler, and it’s unfortunate that she was injured. He put her out of action for such a long time. It’s not an easy situation,” Khan added, “And I try to take it all on a case-by-case basis, and I try.” Give Thunder Rosa every chance to come back and defend the championship. But in the end, you’ll have to be crowned outright champion.”

Then Dave Meltzer provided more details Observer Wrestling Radio, explaining how Rosa’s injury kept her out for much longer than expected. He said (h/t WrestleTalk), “The deal with Rosa was, when she went down, she was going to lose the title at an All Out pay-per-view to Toni Storm. They expected her to come back in November/December, in that time frame, and I think the feeling was, because of what happened with Punk, where they gave it a few months, to be consistent they have to do the same thing here. Now it’s like February, so I think now they’re saying February is too long.”

Rosa responded to the news by tweeting on Wednesday night, “Thank you #ThunderArmy for all the support and @aew for being there for me. Dreamlike moments happened on this tour, not that I wanted to lose a championship. But you deserve a champ present; on to the next chapter.”

AEW will wrap up its 2022 event schedule with the advent of winter on December 14th in Garland, Texas. Two matches have been confirmed for the show so far – AEW World Champion MJF vs Ricky Starks and Death Triangle vs. The Elite as part of their Best of Seven Series.
