The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special has some wild Suicide Squad connections

James Gunn’s imprint on the world of superheroes continues to ebb and flow in some interesting ways, as the director and writer contributes significantly to both the Marvel and DC franchises. Two of Gunn’s most recently released projects in that space are DC projects Suicide Squad and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, the latter of which arrived on Disney+ on Friday. The Marvel Cinematic Universe special’s presentation was full of festive cheer – as well as some surprising tie-ins with Suicide Squad. Obviously major spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Lurking below! Just see if you want to know!

The holiday special It follows the crazy adventures of Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Drax (Dave Bautista), who kidnap Kevin Bacon and bring him into space as the perfect Christmas present for Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt). When Mantis and Drax get to Earth, they cross paths with several people in Los Angeles – including the club’s owner (played by Flula Borg) who they’re paying for drinks. When Mantis and Drax try to get to Kevin Bacon, he catches the attention of the police, including the officer (portrayed by Tinashe Kajese).

These side characters are represented alike Suicide Squad graduates, with Borg portraying the short-lived superhero Javelin, and Kajese portraying ARGUS employee Flo Crowley. If that wasn’t enough, two of them Suicide SquadOther stars — Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie and Peacemaker actor John Cena — also appear on the celebrity home tour map that Mantis and Drax are getting in Los Angeles.

In a weird way, this brings things a little full circle between the two franchises, after Klementieff portrayed a club dancer in The Suicide Squad.

“Well, I mean, people know I almost picked Dave [Bautista] In a role and he couldn’t do it, so he didn’t, “John has made fun of that appearance before.” Other than that, well, there might be a vigilante somewhere in the movie that no one has seen yet that I’m very surprised by… I’ve had a hundred reviews from this movie and I’m very surprised.”
