QD-OLED TVs, the new panel technology that combines the best attributes of OLED TVs with the best attributes of QLED TVs, may still be in its infancy – but it’s on its way to making a huge leap forward.
according to FlatPanelsHD (Opens in a new tab) Quoting The Elec in South Korea, Samsung Display has received a machine that will allow it to manufacture 8K QD-OLED panels.
The machine is called Jarvis and, according to its manufacturer, Kateeva, is a G8.5 inkjet solution for mass production of QD-OLED displays. It is these screens that will eventually make their way into 8K TVs and HD displays.
It’s not clear when that will materialize — in fact, Samsung Display has yet to officially announce any plans to produce 8K QD-OLED TVs. So how do we know we’ll get one? Well, don’t buy a $14.5 billion machine until it looks nice on the factory floor.
Analysis: Should you be excited about an 8K QD-OLED TV?
As you’ve probably noticed, there isn’t a lot of native 8K content out there these days. The only way to truly watch 8K content is to download it to a USB drive and plug it into the back of an 8K TV…and that’s not something most people are keen on doing when they buy a new TV.
Having said that, there will be a point when that changes. As televisions continue to get larger and more expensive, we’ll need higher resolutions to preserve detail in the picture. We’ll also need TVs that are hotter and have better contrast.
The solution? 8K QD-OLED.
It’s hard to predict when they’ll arrive — and more importantly, how much they’ll cost. The only two QD-OLED TVs currently available, the Samsung S95B OLED and Sony A95K OLED, aren’t exactly cheap, but the 65-inch versions aren’t much more expensive than traditional OLED TVs. If this continues to be the case with future 8K models, you may be able to get one in your living room in a few years for a perfectly reasonable price.
