We haven’t been expecting the Google Pixel 7a launch for several months yet, but that hasn’t stopped details from surfacing online. The latest includes a series of demos developed by experienced leaker Onleaks (aka Steve Hemmerstoffer) and smartbreaks (Opens in a new tab).
It is not clear what information was used to develop these offers. In the past, early renderings used leaked CAD files and other technical documents, and others were based on guesswork and speculation. The fact that Smartprix has published exact dimensions of the phone suggests that it could be the first.
The design isn’t all that different from the Pixel 6a, which isn’t a huge surprise. The renders feature the same ribbon-like camera module on the back of the phone, and the more prominent aperture lens featured on both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 6a range. According to Smartprix, the phone’s dimensions will be 6.0 x 2.87 x 0.35 inches, which is a fraction larger than the Pixel 6a’s 5.99 x 2.82 x 0.35 inches.
It makes sense that the Pixel 7a would be mostly indistinguishable from the Pixel 6a — at least to the casual observer. It’s probably Google’s cheap Pixel phone, after all, and major design changes are likely reserved for a future flagship. However, we have yet to see the changes inside.
Early rumors already suggested the Pixel 7a could come with some major camera upgrades, including a new telephoto lens — something that’s been missing in both the Pixel 6a and Pixel 7. It seems unlikely, and this feature is missing from these renders, but it’s odd. Things happened.
The Pixel 7a will also likely feature the Tensor G2 chip, which debuted in the Pixel 7, with Android 13 out of the box. The phone is supposed to be among the first to get Android 14, when it launches, and it will have some cost-saving features like lower RAM and storage than the flagship Pixel 7 range.
However, we hope Google adds some premium features, including a 90Hz refresh rate and stronger battery life. Those are two of the Pixel 6a’s biggest drawbacks, after all.
Google hasn’t officially revealed anything about the Pixel 7a yet, and it likely won’t reveal Google I/O 2023 — which is expected to happen in May. Google doesn’t have a good track record of keeping phone secrets under wraps, so expect to see plenty of details released to the web before this date. We will look forward to giving you all the important stuff as we figure it out.
