Since it first hit theaters earlier this year, Elvis He was praised for his extreme and extravagant approach to Elvis Presley’s life. One of the conversations surrounding the film, which was directed by Baz Luhrmann, was which scenes might be left on the cutting room floor, and whether or not a four-hour director might see the light of day. In a recent interview with IndieWireLuhrmann not only hinted that he expected the release of the extended cut of Elvis Once upon a time – but footage that could be spun includes full concerts of Austin Butler performing as Presley.
“It’s an association of directors,” Luhrmann revealed. “It’s not cutting. There’s a lot of material going into four hours, but I’m on the record now to say not today, not tomorrow, but sometime I will.” [it]. Because Austin threw his full parties. He did all the numbers. Austin just did it and it was an out of body experience to watch him perform those full concerts, so one day I’m going to cut those whole concerts together.”
“We had all the cameras,” Luhrmann continued. “[Cinematographer] Mandy Walker even got clone lenses from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s to perfectly match everything.”
Will there be an extended cut of Elvis?
As Luhrmann explained ScreenRant Earlier this year, a longer Elvis cut could finally arrive – but only after he takes a small break from the project.
“Not now, and probably not next year,” Luhrmann explained. “But I don’t close my mind to the idea that there might be a way to explore another way in the future [cut]. I have to be really careful here, because the minute I put it out there… I tell you what, all of my tweets are just, ‘We want a four-hour copy!’ We want a copy of four hours! I think people stand at my gate with a pitchfork saying, “We want a four-hour version!” But I don’t close my mind to the idea that there will be an extended cut. Right now, with how long it’s been in theaters and how well it’s doing, it’s pushed the boundaries. But it was done very well on HBO Max over the weekend, so it’s more about the parent company’s continuity of, “Wow, it’s really worth the money.”
“Because it’s not like you’ve got it, and you put it out there,” Luhrmann continued. “Every minute in post-production you have to do VFX, grading, trimming, refining, ADR audio. It’s not like sitting there is over and I can just hit a button and it comes out. To go back and work on it. To do an extended cut, You’ll be working on it for another four or six months. I’m not closed off on that, but not now. I’m working a little on the tired side.”
