iOS 16.1.2 is now available for iPhone and it brings some major updates according to Apple notes (Opens in a new tab). This includes “improved compatibility with wireless carriers” and “failure detection improvements on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.”
Crash detection is one of Apple’s notable new safety features introduced this year with the iPhone 14 series. The feature is supposed to activate Emergency SOS and alert emergency services if you’re involved in a car accident. But several users reported that the feature was unintentionally triggered on roller coaster rides and now, even while skating.
There have been multiple reports of malfunction detection being activated in theme parks. But now, ski resorts in Utah have seen a surge of emergency services activated without incident. Summit County dispatchers in Utah see three to five emergency calls from Apple devices a day, and so far, none of them have been intentionally activated. Reddit Users (Opens in a new tab) I also mentioned that skiing could trigger a false alarm, and in fact, some reported that even at a moderate pace down an incline the feature was triggered.
But it looks like Apple can finally fix this crash detection bug with the new update, though the company didn’t specifically mention it.
Apple’s notes only mention “improving” crash detection but hopefully a fix includes this aspect of the security feature.
The iOS 16.2 beta recently added a way to report accidental Emergency SOS activations as well. This will be the next major iOS 16 update after iOS 16.1 and it is expected to be released in December. iOS 16.2 will also bring a new Freeform whiteboard app, a revamped HomeKit build, lock screen widgets for sleep and medication tracking and live activity updates as well.
