The New York-based Andy Warhol Foundation, which distributes grants in the creative sector, has announced the 2022 Art Book Award winners.
The nonprofit will distribute a total of $695,000 to support the project of twenty writers across three literary categories: essays, books, and short writing. Each recipient will receive between $15,000 and $50,000 in funding. The annual scholarship focuses on supporting art criticism.
In a statement announcing the winners, the Warhol Foundation’s Art Writers Grant Director Pradeep Dalal described this year’s honored writers as “very wealthy.” Themes represented in the projects deal with issues related to race, environmental activism, and work.

Dalal went on to describe the need for funding art criticism as “urgent”, amid “the opening up of publishing houses, national newspapers reducing their technical coverage and staff, and university presses relying on authors to find additional support to publish their books.”
