Netflix’s new six-part docuseries focusing on the relationship between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has been a hot topic even before its release last week. So it’s no surprise that its launch drew a lot of interest from Netflix subscribers.
In fact, docuseries just shot straight onto Netflix’s most-watched list. It is currently ranked No. 2 in the US behind only juggernaut Wednesday. In the UK, it was done better and took first place.
However, while the TV show is clearly attracting a lot of attention, it has also received significant backlash, and its subjects, Meghan Markle in particular, have become targets of internet abuse. Here’s why everyone’s talking about Harry and Meghan.
What are Harry and Meghan talking about?
Harry and Meghan An intimate look at the relationship between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Split into six episodes released in two installments, the documentary chronicles how the couple met, their early engagement, their engagement, and their lavish wedding, as well as the events that led to their withdrawal from life as working members of the British royal family.
It should be noted that this document is not dependent on the accounts used either. Harry and Meghan were fully involved in its production and were the primary interview subjects throughout the series. Close friends and family of the couple also provide commentary, as do royal historians who delve into how the couple deviated so severely from established protocols in the royal family.
Why Harry and Meghan controversial?
On the surface, Harry and Meghan may seem like a fairly ordinary documentary, but the series has become a source of controversy across social media.
Some British commentators have objected to what they see as a disrespectful tone towards the country’s entrenched monarchy. Meanwhile, the couple, and especially Megan, received a tidal wave of abuse for their direct involvement. Meghan has been the subject of a massive smear campaign for several years now, and the release of this document has sadly exacerbated this pre-existing problem.
The backlash from some viewers is evident, which is probably why the show drew some of the lowest audience ratings of the year. on me Rotten tomatoes (Opens in a new tab) Harry & Meghan only managed a viewership rating of 12%, and things don’t get much better IMDb (Opens in a new tab) The document received an overall rating of 3.2. Harry and Meghan – Live or Skip?
With so much attention and controversy, it’s no wonder Harry and Meghan have become another hit for Netflix. The show may attract a small army of detractors, but all that vitriol only generates more interest in the duo – which is probably the end goal of the documentary in the first place.
Right now, the first three episodes of the show have been released on Netflix, and the remainder of the season is set to premiere on the streaming platform later this week (Thursday, December 15). So, now is the time to get caught. Of course, if you’re not into the behind-the-scenes drama of the British royal family, you’ll probably want to stay away from it regardless.
However, if you just couldn’t get enough of The Crown, or have always been fascinated by the inner workings of the British monarchy, Harry & Meghan is a documentary you won’t want to skip. Just make sure that no matter what you think of the couple after you’ve watched, you maintain respect. Social media is already awash with vile abuse directed at the couple, and there is no excuse for anyone to contribute more.
