Geppetto losing his son in a bombing raid was something I hadn’t expected
This movie starts out in the dark. very, very dark.
The 2022 live version of Pinocchio It’s a little darker than Disney’s original animated movie, but none is darker than Guillermo del Toro’s version of the story. We start with the world at war, and Geppetto, a single father, who loses his son in a church, of all things, in a bombing raid – where the bombs weren’t even supposed to be dropped on that city. It was just an accident.
Immediately, we get caught up in this idea of grief, and learn to come to terms with the loss, and it is Heartbreaking. It’s this and so much more, that way you know what kind of movie you’re getting into – when your hands are in your hair in disbelief at the beginning of the movie and your eyes are already teary eyed. Seeing Geppetto lose himself after his son’s death was very sad – but it makes the ending all the more meaningful.
Ewan McGregor is awesome as Sebastian G. Cricket
This is just a side note, but man, I lovable Ewan McGregor Like Sebastian G Cricket. Entire receive from Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro It’s amazing, but he was honestly one of the standouts. It’s funny, because I feel as though this version of the “good side” of Pinocchio didn’t do much in the movie, but even so, I’ll remember him most because he was So funny.
His personality is like this hungry artist who wants to get his books out to the world, but over time, we see a change in him as he starts to care about Pinocchio and actually wants to lead him to do good things and bring him back to life. in the end. And his funny moments, like when he’s about to burst into song and Pinocchio slams a door in his face, are a great tension breaker from some of the story’s more serious moments, thanks to McGregor’s stellar delivery.
The fact that this story focuses on living up to parents’ expectations is heartbreaking
I mean, the feel of this movie very Real, at least for me. I know not everyone goes through this, but there are many children who constantly have to live up to the expectations parents have set them up, expecting them to be something they are not. And the Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro He tells that story, with Geppetto trying his best to turn Pinocchio into another version of Carlo, his late son, but ultimately not succeeding. After many attempts, Geppetto becomes frustrated with Pinocchio and calls him a burden.
That’s why Pinocchio set out on his journey in the first place, to prove to his father that he wouldn’t be a burden anymore. None of that “I wanna be a real boy” thing is original Pinocchio No – in fact, that’s barely mentioned in this movie. It’s all about Pinocchio trying to prove himself to his father, by selling himself for money, and then joining the Italian Craftsmanship army During World War II in order to make his father proud.
It’s a very mature theme – one I didn’t expect from this movie, and I love it a lot. It almost looks like a Coming of age movie From a children’s movie.
But it also coincides with parents learning to love children as they are
However, even if much of the movie revolves around Pinocchio trying to prove himself to his father, it also coincides with Geppetto’s journey in loving Pinocchio learning who he is. It’s a long journey, but in the end he doesn’t care that he’s not Carlo. All he wants is Pinocchio back when he literally turns into a human being for a moment just so he can save his father as he drowns while trying to escape a giant sea monster.
As Wood Sprite begs to save Pinocchio, to save his son, you We see How much does he love Pinocchio? He knows he’s not Carlo and he never will be Carlo, but he’s totally fine with that. He just wants his son back, and that’s a sweet story.
I can’t get over how beautiful the stop-motion animation is

I didn’t think stop motion animation could get any more beautiful, but this movie did that and more. From the water scenes where Pinocchio was trying to make it out alive from a sea monster to watching his nose grow, to seeing the interesting puppets and characters, everything looked absolutely amazing. amazing And I loved every second of it. It was done perfectly.
Death (both symbolic and literal) is both scary and beautiful
in Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro, There’s literally a character named Death who’s the Wood Sprite’s sister, and lowkey, she’s beautiful and terrifying at the same time. She doesn’t have a moving face, however, she is so majestic in the way she talks, talks, and lectures the main character on ways of life that I just can’t help but ignore her. I am intrigued.
Yet, at the same time, the themes of death in this movie are also both eerie and beautiful, and have caused me to rethink my whole life. About how our mortal lives are so small and condensed in the great timeline, that we should use them as best we can and spare our loved ones, because we never quite know when it will be the last time we see them. this deep message to be portrayed in this movie, and although the idea of death is scary, it’s also beautiful.
The afterlife in this one is kind of scary, too. I’ve always had this overwhelming fear of the end of my life, of what the afterlife could look like, and in this, at first, it feels scary, but in the end, it feels almost peaceful, to be in this world with your loved ones again (as we can see with Sebastian at the end), and leave the mortal world behind. It’s been done well.
This was the saddest and most perfect ending that I could have imagined
I mean, wow. I’m sure I’ve cried more in the last fifteen minutes Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro than i have in any movie this year. it’s a So sad. Freaking so sad. Pinocchio, as death told him, outlived everyone. Geppetto, Spatatora, and even Sebastian, they’re all gone. Whatever happens, death happens to our loved ones.
However, I think what I find beautiful about this sad ending is that Pinocchio, then, accepts that, and moves on to find a whole new adventure. Sebastian has stated that he believes Pinocchio died in the end, but we don’t know for sure. However, what makes him perfect is that Pinocchio became what he was intended to be – a source of life and joy to those he knew, and then when they died, he went to find something new. this beautiful. It’s sad that his family is gone, but it’s amazing that he’s out to make someone else’s life happier.
It’s what makes this ending so tragically beautiful, and it’s something that made me think about what I’m doing with my life and how I can continue to make people happy as I get older.
Who knew that adapting a wooden doll story would make me cry so much? But here we are. For those who have I have seen Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro, You understand what I’m saying.
