The future of the DC Universe continues to evolve at a rapid pace, now that James Gunn and Peter Safran have been tapped to run DC Studios. The duo will now oversee a number of movies, TV shows, video games, and more inspired by DC comics — and tonight, we got our first idea of what that would entail, with Gunn himself writing a new Superman reboot. The film, which will follow a younger Superman as he arrives in Metropolis, will not star former Superman actor Henry Cavill. According to subsequent reports about Gunn’s reboot, it appears that another Man of Steel-related project could still happen.
according to Hollywood ReporterGunn’s new movie is said to have “no influence” on the Black Superman movie written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and produced by JJ Abrams. Their report states that Coates is still working on the script.
What will JJ Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates be up to? Superman be the movie about?
It comes after one of the most recent reports about the film in April of this year indicated that Coates “will be submitting a draft script… soon.” A subsequent report in June indicated that the studio “has not yet finalized plans” for this project. Coates’ film was previously rumored to be about Black Superman, likely to be a short film set sometime in the 20th century, apparently in line with the original comic appearance of Superman in 1938. Michael B. on the HBO Max series, with rumors suggesting he could play Val-Zod.
“To be invited to the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films, and Bad Robot is a huge honor.” Coates told Shadow and Act in a statement when his movie was first announced. “I look forward to a meaningful addition to the legacy of America’s most legendary hero.”
“There’s a new, powerful, poignant Superman story yet to be told,” Abrams added. “We could not be more thrilled to be working with the wonderful Mr. Coates to help bring this story to the big screen, and we are incredibly grateful to the Warner Bros. team for the opportunity.”
