Saturday Night Live fans had an emotional binge watching the latest episode of Cecily Strong

Cathy Ann finally managed to light her cigarette. Seven years later Saturday Night LiveCecily Strong chose to leave the live comedy, as the December 17 episode marked the last time she would be on the staff of 30 Rock. Strong appeared in most of the overnight sketches, and made a cameo appearance in the show’s “Weekend Update” segment, where she appears as one of its most popular characters.

Playing Kathy Ann, a character known for trying to light her cigarette throughout every appearance, Strong is Remembered with Update hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che. Moved to tears, Strong hugged her co-stars goodbye before signing on to the fake news show one last time.

Strong first joined the show in 2012, hosting Weekend Update alongside SNL alumnus Seth Meyers. Meyers then left comedy to host his own show and was replaced by Jost. Jost and Strong hosted the segment through the rest of the season before the latter was replaced by Che prior to the start of season 40. At the start of this year’s season 48, Strong passed Kate McKinnon as the longest-serving female cast member in the history of the Lorne Michaels-created show.
