It’s not like Cameron isn’t busy releasing the first of five Avatar sequels. First cinema last week, and that’s clearly the director’s “sweet spot” in annual programming since he released Titanic 25 years ago today. And in the year 2022, he’s still haunted by the endless theories and desperate cries that poor Jack would have survived if only he’d been allowed to climb out of the icy ocean into that cozy floating door.
Before we got to the “science” one thing was always clear. As beautiful as Jack’s miraculous survival may have been, it wouldn’t have packed quite the same punch as we were all crying out to Celine Dion over the closing credits.
Cameron himself said earlier: “It’s a movie about love, sacrifice and mortality. Love is measured by sacrifice.”
The tragedy certainly helped propel the film to over $2 billion at the global box office and a place in the history books before the same director’s Avatar rose to become the biggest blockbuster in history.
However, to celebrate the anniversary, Cameron conducted rigorous testing and made a short film about his findings.
This week, Cameron told the Toronto Sun, “We did a scientific study to put this whole thing to rest and drive the stake to her heart once and for all. We’ve since run a thorough forensic analysis with the hypothermia expert who reproduced the raft from the movie, and we’ll with a little special work on it which will be released in February.
“We took two gay people with the same body mass as Kate and Leo, put sensors all over and inside of them, put them in ice water, and tested them to see if they could survive through a variety of methods and the answer was, there’s no way they could both survive.” .Only one can survive.”
Winslet had previously agreed with the legion of fans who were convinced Jack could have stayed by her side.
However, she recently told the Happy Sad podcast: “All I can say is, I have a pretty good understanding of water and how it behaves. If you put two adults on a paddleboard, it immediately becomes very precarious. That’s for sure.
“I have to be honest: I actually don’t think we would have survived if we both got through that door. I think it would have been a decent fit, but it would have flipped and it wouldn’t have been a sustainable idea.”
Winslet concluded, “You heard it here for the first time. Yes, he would have fit in that door. But he wouldn’t have stayed afloat. He wouldn’t have.”
So far, Leo himself hasn’t made any recent comments about it. But then, why would he want Jack to live? The movie undoubtedly made him the biggest star in Hollywood at the time, and it’s not too bad 25 years later.
