Users have discovered a new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max bug on multiple forums (via Mac rumors (Opens in a new tab)), where different numbers of green and yellow horizontal lines appear on the screen when the phone wakes up.
According to user accounts (mostly centered on this p/iPhone Reddit thread (Opens in a new tab)), this problem has occurred at least since the arrival of iOS 16.2, but there are some reports of older versions as well.
Resetting the phone doesn’t seem to make a difference either, although the issue is inconsistent, not happening with every capture and showing a different number of lines each time. In one case, the user claims that it happens more regularly afterwards Watch the video just before locking the phone (Opens in a new tab).
We tried to replicate the error on our iPhone 14 Pro Max (running iOS 16.2 (20C65)), but our actions were normal. We also tried it with the iPhone 14 Pro’s always-on display turned off, but that didn’t change anything.
Some forum users said that after contacting Apple Support, they were told this was an iOS 16 issue, not a hardware issue, so we can breathe a sigh of relief there. Hopefully, this means that this strange issue could be addressed with a software update in the near future, something a Reddit user claims an Apple support worker reported to them directly.
iOS 16.3 is currently in beta, but it likely won’t be publicly released until the spring. Ideally, Apple would rectify the problem sooner than this, even if from what can be seen, this problem does not seem to have any danger to the phone.
Apart from this issue, and the lack of supply of the most requested models, it seems that the launch of the iPhone 14 series was very smooth. All four models in the family are excellent, but the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max remain our favourites, even if some of them are having a strange time with those flashing lines right now.
