There is no such thing as a “bad year for movies.” If you’ve gone 12 whole months without seeing any new releases you like, it’s less likely a result of the medium failing you, and more likely a result of not watching enough movies. It is a fact that is learned every December, and 2022 certainly does not disrupt this pattern. When thinking about everything that’s been playing in theaters and/or streaming services since the first week of January, movie fans will recognize a slew of titles that will be remembered for a long time to come.
Personally, I’ve watched 128 new movies that came out this year, and it was a real challenge to put them side by side and decide the best of the best…but that was the annual assignment, and that’s it. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to include all of my favourites, as I didn’t find myself with enough room to include films like Robert Eggers’ NorthmanMatt Reeves BatmanOlbin, Matt Bettinelli, and Tyler Gillett ScreamRyan Coogler Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverand Todd Field tarbut below I outlined what I determined to be the best films to be shown in 2022.
10. Emergency
Carey Williams emergency It begins as a typical coming-of-age comedy, with a group of friends (Donald Elise Watkins, RJ Sayler, Stephen Chacon) getting ready for an epic, life-changing night of partying on campus…but then all those plans fall into ruin when The boys discover a frosty blonde girl (Maddie Nichols) in the living room of their apartment. Then, the typical coming-of-age comedy suddenly becomes about race and policing in America, unfolding as an interesting commentary that also manages to be funny out loud at times. This is a tough tightrope to walk, but the movie brings it out.

Class warfare was a big thing in the 2022 movies (something you’ll notice is well represented on this list on the whole), and Mark Mylod’s food menu He has a very sharp bite. It lures you in with the mystery, because it’s clear from the start that something isn’t quite right with the secluded and prestige restaurant run by Ralph Fiennes’ chef Julian Slowik, and the clever script uses the various courses of one night’s meal to dramatize its funny and macabre mayhem. Anya Taylor-Joy continues to prove herself as one of the great talents of her generation, and she is surrounded by an outstanding cast.
food menu It will be available to stream on HBO Max On January 3, 2023.
8. Quiet and serene
If you’re a fan of horror and haven’t heard much about Beth de Araujo’s Soft and calm, that’s not a bad thing; Just keep it that way before you get rent/buy it and hit play. If you don’t know much about it, it’s a movie that sneaks up on you as you watch – it starts with a group of like-minded women coming together for a meeting with vague intentions – just as you lean in, it shakes you back on your heels. It’s a colossal achievement in stylistically alone, as the action unfolds in real time in what appears to be a one-shot (with the cuts minimal and practically invisible), and sets up a tense, restrained atmosphere that makes way for creepy, unsettling commentary about modern American society.

7. Onion Glass: Knives Brings Out the Mystery
I really hate Rian Johnson’s full moniker Glass Onion: Takes the mystery out of the cutlery (Why not trust the public and make it fair glass onion? or at leastBenoit Blanc puzzle’?), but at the same time it says a lot about the quality of a movie when the title is the only thing to complain about. This second murder mystery featuring the aforementioned Kentucky detective Daniel Craig is a formidable follow-up worthy of its excellent predecessor, featuring yet another great cast and a hilariously entertaining plot that delivers surprise after surprise that led up to the inspiration-filled third chapter. All stars are massive, but just as Ana de Armas owned the spotlight in the original, Janelle Monáe is the heroine of the sequel.

6. Resurrection
This is the time of year when publications, film organizations, and critics groups identify and praise the best performances of the past 12 months, and you should be suspicious of any feature or nomination list that doesn’t highlight the work that Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth have done on Andrew Semans resurrection. This has been a great year for horror films in general (which I think is representative of this list as a whole), but this is a special year that inspires you to curl up in the fetal position as it sinks its tentacles into your mind – telling the story of a woman (Hall) who finds herself haunted and loses her mind when he returns A dangerous and controlling ex-man (Ruth) comes into her life. It’s terrifying and leaves your jaw on the floor.

5. Nope
Writer/director Jordan Peele’s true brilliance can be understood from his eye for detail. Everything in his films—from character details to props—has at least one meaning, if not several, that the filmmaker uses to illustrate a larger theme. With NoPeele’s focus is on our world’s never-ending obsession with spectacle, which is a colossal contradiction in being such a spectacle on the big screen in its own right. It’s a great cinematic tribute Jaws And the Close Encounters of the Third Kindwhich features terrific performances from Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Stephen Yeun, Michael Wincott, and Brandon Perea, and a twist at the heart of the plot, which flips the screenplay on sci-fi conventions, is my favorite of the year.

4. The sorcery of Inisherin
Fourteen years ago, writer/director Martin McDonagh made an indelible impact on the film industry when he made his directorial debut with in Bruges — and so there was only an expectation of awesomeness when he met co-stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson for The Anisherin from Inisherin. No way disappoint. Combined with two actors who once again prove they have great cinematic chemistry that perfectly matches McDonagh’s unique voice and dark comedy, this is a great movie about friendship and what’s important in life. Farrell and Gleeson are amazing, but Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon are the secret weapons.
you can stream Anisherin from Inisherin on HBO Max.
3. Triangle of grief
One of the best things about movies in 2022 is the disgusting stuff unrepentantly showing up on the big screen. Jeff Tremaine ass foreverDamien Lyon Terrifying 2and Damien Chazelle Babylon They all have their own moments that may influence those with a weak stomach to lose their lunch, Robin Ostlund Sadness triangle On another level entirely. The film’s second act, which takes place on a cruise populated by the wealthy, will likely be seen as one of the most nauseating episodes of modern cinema, but it’s all in the service of social satire that gets better and better. incisive as the story unfolds.

2. Marcel the Bomber with Boots
When I went to see Dean Fleischer Camp Marcel the projectile with shoes This summer, I was in a bad, exhausted mood — and was actually worried I was going to doze off in the middle of a show. I ended up not doing it, and that’s because Marcel the projectile with shoes It’s magic. It’s a simply stunning cinematic achievement in the way it seamlessly blends live-action and stop-motion (a genius creative effort), and it’s a beautiful, kind, and funny examination of the importance of family and community. You may not believe that your heart could be broken by an anthropomorphic shell, but Marcel will prove you wrong.

1. Everything is everywhere at once
The multiverse has enormous appeal for movie fans. After all, if there are an infinite number of alternate universes, that would mean that every movie is a window into a parallel reality. More importantly, it means that anything is possible and that existence is limitless — and so far, no film has understood the power of this idea better than Daniels’ exceptionally bizarre film. Everything everywhere at once. It’s an amazing, mind-bending journey that delights in exploring the exotic extremes of its core concept, and on top of that it’s a powerful intergenerational drama full of heart. Furthermore, Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Kee Hui Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, and James Hong make up the Best Movie 2022 Ensemble of 2022.
