1923 Recap with Spoilers: Nature’s Empty Throne

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the final episode of Yellowstone prefix 1923 The episode “Nature’s Empty Throne” begins with Spencer Dutton being attacked by a leopard just as he was at the end of the series premiere, but he manages to fight it off. His comrades come to his aid, but one of them is attacked. Spencer and the surviving partner are allowed to kill the tiger, but they are unable to save the man. Spencer then enlists the help of a doctor among the tourists to clean the wounds on the leopard that attacked him because leopards have very dirty claws. Spencer also confronts the leader of the tourists about how he did not reveal the existence of a pair of tigers.

In Montana, Jacob and the others hear the shots and ride off to see what happened. They find Jake pinned under his horse, which has been shot by a sheepherder. They are stopped before they can kill him and he confronts Jacob Banner. Banner claims he doesn’t know who shot him, but Jake says they were all shooting at him. Banner tries to defend himself by saying nothing gets that high. Jacob orders his men to round up the sheep and send them to the reservation, where the people are starving. Jacob then put Banner and his men in nooses and then on their horses, leaving them either hanging if the horses galloped or somehow setting them free.

At school, the nuns continue to “educate” the Indigenous girls on how to be American, this time about sweeping and cleaning as they brutalize them when they don’t do things quite right. Teona deliberately disobeyed. Later, during dinner, there are maggots in the food and Teona speaks her mother tongue, prompting a nun to chastise her which in turn prompts her to fight back. She was punished by being left by the priest in a hot box.

Back at the house, Kara and Emma sit on the porch and talk about how Elizabeth grew up more east than on the farm and how it will only fuel Jake’s recklessness. After returning to the property, Banner survives and manages to free himself. Not all of his men were so lucky as most of them ended up hanging to death when their horses rode. At the reservation, Isachchi (Amelia Rico) meets with the superintendent and asks Teona – her granddaughter – to take her home to the reservation, but to do so Isachchi will have to adopt her as Teona is only her granddaughter. Meanwhile, Zane gives the natives the sheep and they accept it and thank Dutton.

At school, Teona is removed from the hot box. She is very weak and is taken to the baths, but is sexually assaulted by the nun who is bathing her. Sister Mary intervened, though she continued to try to defend her cruelty towards Teona, the other girls, and the school’s target before hitting her. In Africa, Spencer heads to Nairobi and is at a bar in a nice hotel. He is approached by a British woman, surprised that he is American. Flirt with him. He asserts that he works on the reservation and kills the Defenders, something she finds romantic but he doesn’t. It is revealed that she is engaged, but is interested in Spencer and he seems to be interested in her. His employer asks Spencer if he is able to use a shotgun with his leopard injuries because he was hired to kill a spotted hyena attacking the railroad engineers.

It turns out that the woman, Alexandra, is in an arranged engagement she doesn’t really want to be in. The next day, as Spencer is heading off to deal with the hyena, she grabs her bags and runs after him. She ends up running away with him.
