Co-star Daniel Day-Lewis couldn’t stand him on the set of “I Refused to Be Scared” | Movies | entertainment

Sir Daniel Day-Lewis is considered by many to be one of the greatest living actors of his generation, having won three Academy Awards for Best Actor. The now 65-year-old has retired, which he announced following the release of his latest film, Phantom Thread — a film that reunited him with his There Will Be Blood Paul director Thomas Anderson. The 2017 film had the star playing a 1950s tailor opposite a young waitress played by Vicky Krebs. Now in a new interview, the actress has slammed the acting legend for his insufferable behavior on set.

Day-Lewis is known for staying completely in character on set, requiring everyone working on his films to address him by their role name. In My Left Foot, his character had cerebral palsy, so the star remained in a wheelchair throughout filming and the crew had to spoon-feed him.

Before filming The Last of the Mohicans, the triple Oscar winner lived for a month in the North Carolina wilderness. And in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, he’d text fellow Civil War chief Sally Field and sign it “For you, A.”

As for his approach to acting in Phantom Thread, Krieps highlighted her frustration with the special treatment he received and reciprocated through her role.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Krebs said: “After half the movie, I’m really sick of it. Like: OK, I see. It’s a game. I played that. But can we talk normally now, please?”

The actress from Luxembourg was unfamiliar with Day-Lewis’ acting style prior to filming Phantom Thread and tiptoed all over the “great play” on location with the cast and crew whispering “He’s here! My Lord! It” to be completely baffled.

She said, “I’m a person who thinks we’re all equal. We all sit on the toilet. I could see everything like a circus. I just wasn’t afraid.”

Ultimately, Krebs said the line “you and your people and your walls and your rules” in Phantom Thread as a way of expressing her annoyance to Daye Lewis. She said, “This was really me talking to a famous actor, saying, ‘Do you really want everyone around you to act weird and talk in a whisper?'” I decided I wasn’t going to look at him in a special way just because he’s Daniel Day-Lewis. He responded to my feeling and played that well.”

The actress added that Phantom Thread production gave her a “crazy” media spin on promoting the film, telling her to only talk about costumes and scenery without talking about her own experience.
