You know who I am? I’m a guy who loves classic movies. Sure, sometimes I’ll leave my house and buy a ticket to go see something like Avatar: Water Road Three-dimensional. But for the most part, I prefer watching some great old movies on my couch. In fact, putting classic movies on my Netflix queue (because yes, I’m still paying for my Netflix DVD plan in 2022), is just one of life’s greatest pleasures, and I love when I find great old movies that people don’t seem to like. They talk about it enough these days.
For example, have you ever seen the 40’s movie, black narcissus;? It’s about nymphomaniac nuns, which is pretty cool. I know you saw Good guysAnd the lateAnd the taxi driverBut have you ever seen Martin Scorsese’s hidden gem, After hours? Seriously, I could go on and on about the classic movies you should check out. In fact, I have six of them for you right now, and not only that, but you can find them. Don’t say I didn’t give you anything for the holidays.
Cry of the City (1948)
Directed by Robert Siodmak, starring Richard Conti, Shelley Winters, Fred Clarke, Victor Mature the Great, City cry The film is about a jewel thief and cop killer named Martin Roma (Conti), who is on the loose, and the persistent police officer who is determined to bring him down (Mature).
City cry is a movie noir done right, with sleazy lawyers, women who are just as competent as the men, and dog attacking police officers. What’s really cool about it, though, is how bad the city feels. And although it is not as famous as in 1946 the killersor 1949 crosswhich was also produced by Siodmak, I’d argue this 1948 movie is just as good, but it doesn’t get quite as much love, which is a shame, because it should be.
Stream City Cry on Criterion Channel.
The Murder (1956)
Stanley Kubrick is my favorite director (wow. Big surprise that comes from a guy who loves classic movies, right?), and one of my all-time favorite movies is another classic noir called the killwhich is often overlooked when discussing Kubrick’s other major works such as Clockwork OrangeAnd the Full metal jacketAnd the Gloss.
Starring Colin Gray, Vince Edwards, and Sterling Hayden, among others, the kill It is about a successful racetrack heist and the repercussions that follow. It is often seen as Kubrick’s first serious work (although killer kiss And the Fear and desire She is also very good). Although it was released in 1956, it still somewhat inspired Tarantino’s first movie, Reservoir dogswhich I consider Tarantino’s second best (his best film Pulp Fiction, Definitely). It’s no wonder he was such a huge inspiration for Tarantino, even though he’s so damn good. Heist movies don’t get much better than this the kill.

L’Aventura (1960)
Now, I know the title of this article is “Great Old Movies That Don’t Get Talked About Enough (And How To Watch Them)” but when I say that, I mean the movies that are. the public No we talk about. For example, when most people bring up movies from the 1960s, they are likely to mention movies like 2001: A Space OdysseyAnd the Planet of the ApesAnd the sociological patient.
I mean, everyone knows those pictures. But, if you talk to a certain crowd of filmmakers, they all talk about Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1960 masterpiece, L’Aventura, which translates as “adventure”. It is often considered one of the greatest films of all time. So, how is it not being talked about enough?
Well, have you ever heard of it? If so, great. You are one of my people. If not, well, no hard feelings. Starring Gabriele Ferzetti, Monica Vitti, and Lea Massari, L’Aventura It is difficult to describe easily. It is about a woman named Anna (Massari) who goes missing. Her lover (Ferzetti) and her friend (Vetti) go looking for her, only to form a romance of their own when they don’t find her. But, it’s more than that, where you get the feeling that these very wealthy people… are missing something in their lives, and You have They lost something in their lives long before one of them disappeared.
Let me warn you up front in case you’re interested, though…No Focus on the missing person side of this movie. If you can get that out of your mind, I think you might just love L’Aventura.

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)
Now, we get to some color pics! John Carpenter is no stranger to most audiences. I mean, I regularly share my thoughts on Big problem in little China On this site (like, seriously, all the time. I’m even going to write an entire article on James Hong just so I can talk about Lo Pan again). And it doesn’t stop there Big problem in little China. thingAnd the HalloweenAnd the Escape from New York. Just choose your favorite John Carpenter movie. There are several to choose from.
But, the one I rarely hear people mention is the 1976 action-thriller, Attack on District 13which was Carpenter’s second film before he reached mega-stardom Halloween. Starring Austin Stoker, Darwin Joston, and Laurie Zimmer, the film is about a police officer who teams up with some inmates to fight off an army of gangsters who have trapped them in a police station. Hence the address. It’s disturbing and violent and unique in the genre in John Carpenter’s way, and it’s also one of his least talked-about films, so, I’m talking about it now. Watch these!

The Return of Martin Jerry (1982)
’80s movies? Old?! Yes, I am afraid. In this French film directed by Daniel Finney and starring Gerard Depardieu and Natalie Baye, the story concerns a true historical case about a man who left for the Hundred Years War, was believed to be dead, and then returned to his home village. But… it was different. Before he left, he was a true SOB, terrible to his wife, and just a bad guy in general, and when he came back, he was charming and likable.
Depardieu plays said character, but throughout the entire movie, you’re left wondering whether or not he’s an imposter. There is evidence that says it might be. This is what keeps it engaged. IF YOU SEE ONE PHOTO ON THIS LIST… DON’T DO IT. Watch them all! But, if you are they were For just seeing one picture, I might suggest this one, because it’s probably the least known movie here.

Radio Talk (1988)
Finally, without touching the 90s, I want to wrap up Oliver Stone’s 1988 drama, Radio talk shows. Starring: Eric Bogosian (who also worked on the screenplay), Alec Baldwin, Elaine Green, and Leslie Hope. Radio talk shows It’s about a shock jock (Bogosian) who gets on a lot of people’s nerves, but also has a heart. His show will probably go national, but he may have to tone down some of his themes, which the shock jock doesn’t think he can handle.
I wanted to highlight Radio talk shows Since I put it there with Natural killersAnd the detachmentAnd the JFK, as one of the best Oliver Stone movies, but like everything else on this list, I didn’t hear it brought up in the conversation. So, I am showing it here.
