From budget phones like Pixel 6a phone All the way to major including iPhone 14 ProAnd the Galaxy S22 UltraAnd the OnePlus 10 ProWe’ve seen a lot of great phones in the past year. But only one device really won my heart in 2022 — and it’s none of the above.
Instead, it was Google Pixel 7 Pro That turned page starts with Pixel 6 Pro Last year to really take his place among The best phones Total.
The Pixel 7 Pro is my phone of the year because it refined everything I loved about its predecessor, made the photography experience better, and offered more features that no other smartphone could yet. The Google Phone is a nice device that gets a lot of fidelity, despite its flaws.
Yes, even with less battery life and performance that still lags behind the latest iPhones and Android phones, the Pixel 7 Pro leads all the other phones out this year, at least for me. While there are better phones out there for power or value, the Pixel 7 Pro ticks most of the boxes I look for in a smartphone.
Pixel 7 Pro: The cameras
There is no doubt that the Pixel 7 Pro has the best cameras in an Android phone. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is the next closest competitor, but it falls short in most circumstances. Google has done something really amazing here.
The primary 50MP sensor on the Pixel 7 Pro does a great job in almost all scenarios. Outdoors, it reliably compensates for exposure to sunlight. If you’re shooting something indoors, the Pixel 7 Pro adapts to the scene, even when the lights are dimmed. And at night, the phone’s Night Sight mode often produces a great low-light photo.
The 48MP telephoto camera comes with 5x optical zoom, making the Pixel 7 Pro more competitive than the iPhone 14 Pro for our zoom tests. If you want to go beyond 5x, Google’s Super Res Zoom does very well with removing noise and blur.
Speaking of blurry photos, Google has delivered The image is not blurred, a feature exclusive to the Pixel 7. The name is self-explanatory — the Pixel 7 Pro will do its best to denoise your photos, including those taken on other phones. Like Magic Eraser before, Photo Unblur relies on the power of Tensor AI to perform magic. Which is really something else.
When comparing a file The best camera phonesI enjoy seeing how easily the Pixel 7 Pro outperforms the iPhone 14 Pro in some scenes, such as night and zoom. The phone business blows away in more standard scenarios, but I like the way Google and Apple claim the photography crown.
Pixel 7 Pro: Design
Is the Pixel 7 Pro the most beautiful phone out there? This depends on your own taste, but it is definitely one of the most unique. The camera strip, which spans the width of the phone, is sure to catch the eye and spot the latest pixel instantly.
I chose the Pixel 7 Pro’s Hazel color method, as it’s the most exciting of the three options. My Pixel 7 Pro has a sage color with soft gold accents, including the camera strip. It’s an amazing look that has yet to tire me out after a few months of use.
Unlike the Pixel 6 Pro, where the camera lens has merged into the band, the Pixel 7 Pro shows its selfie profile more prominently. It makes a statement, telling you those cams mean business. They make this phone more unique than its predecessor.
Thanks to the phone’s curved edges, I don’t mind the Pixel 7 Pro’s bulk. I still prefer small phones, but Google has made a more comfortable phone iPhone 14 Pro Max. Even the stocky Galaxy S22 Ultra feels less comfortable.
Pixel 7 Pro: Software
Google originally released its own phones to show other manufacturers what Android is capable of — and how to handle Android updates. Nowadays, most smartphone makers are better about updates than they were in the Nexus days, but the Pixel line is supposed to offer a lot more than what “stock” Android is.
Much like what Apple does with its latest iPhones and iOS devices, the Pixel 7 Pro embodies what Google thinks Android should look like. From the Material You engine, which adapts to the colors of your wallpaper, to its photographic prowess, Android on the Pixel is about as close as you get with iOS on the iPhone. It’s where hardware and software come together.
launch with Android 13, Pixel 7 Pro is the best way to experience the operating system. While I love Samsung’s One UI, Google’s vision is more intuitive to me. (Contrast this with OnePlus’ OxygenOS, which turned out to be an ugly, irritating mess.) And it makes sense — Google is a software company first and foremost.
And since Google controls the hardware and software, the Pixel 7 Pro gets every new Android update and security patch first.
Pixel 7 Pro: The screen
Although it is far from the best, the Pixel 7 Pro’s screen is still good enough. Measuring 6.7 inches with a QHD+ resolution, the latest Pixel display is the best screen Google has ever used. It was just shy of 1,000 nits brightness in our testing and comes with an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate.
Yes, the Galaxy S22 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro both have better panels with steadier colors and much higher brightness ranges, but the Pixel 7 Pro’s screen does enough for me. I can see the screen outside while I’m shooting, it’s dim enough for nighttime use, and its 120Hz dynamic refresh rate makes for a smooth scrolling experience. I don’t have any complaints.
Pixel 7 Pro: The bottom line
Of course, I don’t look at the Pixel 7 Pro with rose-tinted glasses. It’s far from perfect, and yet I find myself picking it up every morning next to my iPhone 14 Pro. Sure, Google’s device doesn’t have good battery life, or the fastest performance on demanding tasks like gaming, but the Pixel 7 Pro does what I want it to and does it well.
There is no better photography experience on Android right now, and you could argue that the iPhone 14 Pro lags behind the Pixel in several areas. Google’s design language also stands out in a sea of similar devices.
If you are looking for a flagship experience and want more features than… Pixel 7 Then the $899 Pixel 7 Pro is my tip as a phone to get.
