Samsung can look back on the past year with a degree of satisfaction. Devices like the Galaxy S22 Ultra rank among the best phones introduced in the past year, and have helped Samsung continue to enjoy the biggest slice of the global smartphone market. The phone maker completely dominates the market for the best foldable phones, and its mid-range A-series models continue to earn raves as budget alternatives.
However, there is a sense that Samsung would be better off not resting on its laurels. Market research firm IDC says Samsung in the US trails Apple in market share as of the third quarter of 2022. And while we rate Samsung phones highly when it comes to the critical task of taking pictures, Apple and Google devices It is she who overtakes her for the title of the best camera phone in general.
That leaves work to be done for Samsung, at least if it’s going to maintain its firm grip on the smartphone business. And in 2023, the company is working on new models across all major mobile segments, with a focus on weeding out the competition and reminding us why Samsung’s best phones should be the first thing you turn to when looking for a new device.
Here’s what we expect to see from Samsung in the new year.
Samsung 2023: Galaxy S23 launched
We know more about Samsung’s plans for its Galaxy S lineup as we are very close to launching new models. Samsung Galaxy S23 release date rumors point to a February debut, possibly once the Galaxy Unpacked event occurred on February 1st. If true, that would make the Galaxy S23 the phone’s first major release of 2023, beating the February 7 launch of the OnePlus 11.
Can the Galaxy S23 live up to the hype that comes with its first launch? According to the rumored Galaxy 23 Ultra, the answer appears to be yes. Samsung is said to be taking an interest in this high-end model, giving it a 200MP sensor as the main camera. Users will be able to choose between 200MP, 50MP, and 12.5MP resolutions for stills, depending on their preferences for brightness, color, and detail. It may also be able to shoot 8K video at 30fps, according to another S23 Ultra rumor.
Samsung never stops improving the camera for its high-end model. One report confirms that Samsung plans to offer the brightest screen of any phone, with a peak brightness of 2,100 nits.
At least one change is likely heading to all three rumored Galaxy S23 models, with the Plus and Ultra models likely receiving the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset as their main driver. Our Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 benchmarks indicate that phones using this silicon should be able to challenge the iPhone 14 powered by the A15 Bionic, even if Apple’s Pro models remain out of the range. Even better, the S23 series tends to have an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which could make the new phone an Android powerhouse.
The Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus are rumored to capture the look of the Galaxy S22 Ultra with single lenses instead of a camera housing that blends into the side of the device as part of Samsung’s Contour Cut design. There’s also talk of an upgraded fingerprint sensor under the screen that will cover more surface area and allow you to scan multiple fingerprints at once.
There’s one Galaxy S phone you shouldn’t count on seeing in 2023. While Samsung released the FE version of the previous year’s Galaxy S model two years in a row, it was clear for a while that the Galaxy S22 FE wasn’t going to happen.
Samsung 2023: Galaxy A phones.
One of the reasons Samsung feels it can cancel the Galaxy S22 FE is that its mid-range Galaxy A phones have become powerful enough to be viable alternatives for people who don’t want to pay for a flagship device. For example, the Samsung Galaxy A53 was one of the best cheap phones released this year, which gave the Pixel 6a a run for its money. (or relative lack of money, as the case may be).
We were expecting a successor to the Galaxy A53 and Galaxy A33. (The latter device only ships in Europe.) Reports have surfaced that Samsung is canceling its A7x devices, using the Samsung Galaxy A7x There is no planned successor to the Galaxy A73 (Opens in a new tab)Another phone that never made it to the US If Samsung sticks to last year’s release schedule, new Galaxy A models will arrive sometime in the spring.
Some Galaxy A54 rumors have started to surface with 91 Cell phones that spread alleged visualizations (Opens in a new tab) from the next phone. It shows a phone with a single camera lens on the back, similar to the look of the Galaxy S22 Ultra. It seems that Samsung is looking for a more unified look for each of its flagship and midrange phones, as the A54 also tends to have a wider screen compared to the A53.
Additional Galaxy A54 rumors (Opens in a new tab) It points to a larger battery on this year’s model and a 50MP main camera, which is a megapixel drop from the A53’s 64MP sensor. Samsung observers expect an Exynos chipset to power the new model.
Samsung 2023: foldable plans
If the first half of the new year was all about the Galaxy S flagship phones, Samsung will spend the latter part of the year focusing on foldable phones. Over the past couple of years, Samsung has capped off summer with the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models — a pattern we expect to continue into 2023.
Given how far we are from a possible late summer/early fall release of this year’s foldable devices, there are few rumors about the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 at this point. The next Galaxy Flip is equipped with a larger display — 3 inches instead of the current 1.9-inch panel — and a new hinge designed to make the crease across the foldable screen less noticeable. We don’t know much about the Galaxy Z Fold 5, though we assume Samsung will strive to improve battery life, continue to improve the cameras after the Z Fold 4 upgrade, and perhaps find a way to house the S Pen the way it does. Galaxy S22 Ultra.
As always, people will be keen to see if Samsung can reduce the cost of its foldable phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 start at $1,799 and $999, respectively — the same price as their predecessors. Samsung has made no secret of its desire to make foldable phones more palatable to mainstream shoppers, and price is a huge hurdle to that goal.
Another thing to watch is whether Samsung expands its foldable lineup beyond the foldable phone design of the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold, which opens like a book. Earlier in 2022, a leak claimed that Samsung was working on a phone with a scrollable screen, though that device never materialised. We wonder if 2023 will be the year of the long-rumored Galaxy Z Roll.
Samsung 2023: Outlook
Even if there are no new phones other than the successors to Samsung’s current models, the new year is shaping up to be a very busy year for Samsung. We’ll find out how busy it can be in just over a month when the launch of the Galaxy S23 should get things going for the smartphone giant.
