The machinations of coward Jimmy Dutton finally pay off during the mid-season finale in Yellowstone. The adopted son made his move against the governor of Montana in an effort to salvage a development deal in which stock market opponents had invested so much money. But while John and his family are invested in saving the valley under the guise of protecting “everyone’s a Montanan,” new antagonist Sarah Atwood and Market Equities manipulate Jimmy for the sweet, sweet land of Yellowstone. (All of this is overshadowed by the return of this long-lost character…)
But Jimmy has a point here, because while the land will be destroyed for more small malls and condominiums, it will be a boon for Montana’s economy. This is exactly the point he makes when he tries to sway voters to move for the impeachment of Governor John. Of course, his plan goes as you might expect.
Soon, Jimmy’s least favorite of the sisters, Beth, finds out about the impeachment plans and decides to go straight to the source. She breaks into his house and attacks him with a rock, interrupting some warm, manipulative time with Sarah, only to find that Jimmy has discovered he has a backbone he can stand with.
After Beth threatens Jamie to release the blackmail photos from the end Yellowstone In Season 4, when she catches him disposing of his biological father’s body after killing him, Jimmy returns and says he knows where John has been disposing of the bodies of his enemies all these years. This is a shock to Beth, as it is another secret her father is keeping from her. Jimmy calls her bluff and Beth dares him to call him, forcing her to leave – but not without some chosen words for Sarah.
Beth finally confronts her father, and after they both discuss how far Jimmy is willing to go to get what he wants and hurt his family, they both come to the realization that Jimmy is a threat that must be dealt with. Unfortunately, Jimmy realizes the same thing… After speaking with Sarah, he decides to take advantage of her nefarious powers and possibly kill Beth as well. As he himself says, he is tired of playing defense and wants to protect himself with an attacking maneuver.
It’ll be a while before we learn how Jimmy and Beth’s conflict is resolved (or escalated), as Paramount Network just revealed. Yellowstone Season 5 won’t return until summer 2023.
