Batman director Tim Burton reveals he had a lot of trouble working with Jack Nicholson

While Jack Nicholson was already one of Hollywood’s biggest stars when Batman Debuting in 1989, Tim Burton was beginning his career in the industry. Tasked with helming the big-screen re-imagining of the Caped Crusader, this production wasn’t without its own problems – including a lack of communication between Burton and Nicholson during the project’s shooting.

In the latest issue of empireBurton stated that he had to have someone effectively translate what Nicholson was saying on set because the director didn’t understand his version.

“Jack has a very abstract way of speaking,” said the director. “So he’d say things to me and I’d say, ‘Yeah, I get it,’ and then I’d go to somebody, ‘What was he just talking about?'” So there was this weird communication: non-linear, non-connective…but it was very clear to me. I felt like we had a good caveman-style kind of connection.”

Communication difficulties aside, Burton added that Nicholson helped him find his place as a director, even looking to the actor as a mentor on the grounds of Tinsel Town.

“[Nicholson] Burton added, “He protected and nurtured me, and kept me going, by not getting too overwhelmed by it all.” I was young and dealing with a big studio, and it quietly gave me the confidence to do what I needed to do. and being a backing vocal resonated greatly in the studio. He has made me through everything. It gave me strength.”

Most recently, Burton finally got his stamp on The Addams Family with the hugely popular Netflix production Wednesday a series.

“When I read this [script], you just talked to me about how I feel at school and how you feel about your parents, and how you feel as a person. The Addams Family gave a different kind of reality. It was an interesting combination, Burton remembers Empire magazine.

β€œIn 1976, I went to high school prom,” Burton elaborated. “It was this year curry went out. I felt like a Curry man at that prom. I felt this feeling of needing to be there but not be a part of it. They don’t leave you, those feelings, as much as you want them to go.”
