Jimmy, to me, is the cardinal of the group. I remember talking to the producers and saying he was the golden boy. I’m a sports guy, and I grew up with sports, especially baseball, and my whole thing when I was reading it was, “Well, this guy’s a high school baseball player, and he’s been thrown into the big leagues.”
Even as a “wild card”, Jimmy wouldn’t have lasted long alongside Bill and Stabler if he didn’t have the skills as a detective to go after some of New York’s most dangerous criminals, but he’s also spotted by a target in a club when she’s trying to be inconspicuous. So I think that would be really interesting for people to see.
Jimmy is able to do what the job requires of him while undercover, but he also hasn’t had to undergo an enormous amount of pressure while going it alone either to maintain a secret identity. In fact, he has formed (or attempted to form) various bonds with each of the rest of the team, though Jet didn’t exactly embrace him with open arms Despite his best efforts.
Obviously, how he handles the undercover without them will be a big part of season 3’s new arc, coming not long after he’s shot in the line of duty. The detective doesn’t necessarily look like the type to get SpongeBob tattooed permanently on his skin, and he didn’t explain the story behind it. Brent Antonello shared his reaction to Jamie’s first fall shooting, and then the reveal of his tattoo:
Reading that, you’ll say, “Oh, my God, no.” I thought I’d get word that I was leaving the show, but luckily my SpongeBob tattoo hit… I have a feeling it’s coming back to me somehow. I was asking Sean [Jablonski], renderer. I think this will come back. It wasn’t put there for no reason. So we’ll see what happens with that. I am very interested to know the backstory too.
