This week in Texas: ABC13 speaks to lawmakers in eastern Texas as the 88th Texas legislature begins

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – This week in Texas is a brand new year. And in this first episode of 2023, we visit Southeast Texas state lawmakers on their priorities for the 88th Texas Legislature beginning this week. We speak with a House District 128 Briscoe Cain representative.

“In an ideal world, we would abolish the property tax system and replace it with a consumption tax,” Rep. Cain told ABC13.

We also sit with fellow House Republican from the 26th District, Jesse Jetton.

Of his priorities, he said, “The Education Savings Accounts are what we are looking to provide and will be allocated to specific children.”

Democrat Ron Reynolds of House District 27 hopes to expand Medicaid and gun reform.

“I want to see us raise the age to buy assault rifles,” Reynolds said. “I want to see us enforce meaningful red flag laws.”
