Fall Out Boy has had a busy week. They just released the first details about their next album as well as the release of their latest single, Love From The Other Side, but it’s been capped off by some bad news for the group. Guitarist Joe Truman issued a statement explaining that he was “stepping away” from the band.
Trohman is one of the founding members of Fall Out Boy, along with Patrick Stump and Pete Wentz. In a text message on the band’s Twitter account, the musician wrote: “Neil Young once said it’s better to burn out than to fade away. But I can tell you unequivocally that burning out is awful.”
He revealed that it was his mental health that ultimately led to this shocking decision.
He wrote, “Without divulging every detail, I must disclose that my mental health has deteriorated rapidly over the past several years. So, to avoid fading away and never coming back, I’m going to take a break from work which unfortunately includes stepping away from Fall Out Boy for a spell.”
Truman said it “pained” him to make the decision, especially since Fall Out Boy is about to release their new album, So Much (For) Stardust, on March 24, 2023.
However, he assured his fans that one thing is certain: “So, the question remains: Am I going back into the fold? Absolutely, one hundred percent.” (sic)
However, he added, “In the meantime, I have to recover which means putting myself and my mental health first. Thank you to everyone, including my bandmates and family, for their understanding and respect for this difficult but necessary decision. Smell You Sooner” from Later Joe Truman.”

The 38-year-old’s statement came after the band’s series of announcements, and a live performance of their new track on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday night.
This record would be the first on their new label, fueled by Ramen & Elektra.
Fall Out Boy star Stump also spoke about why the band returned to their “roots” on the new album. In a statement, he said, “Technology has made it really easy to make records more quickly these days. There’s nothing wrong with that, and spontaneity can be exciting. But we wanted to get back to the way we used to work. We wanted to make a record that was really lovingly made, thoughtful and directed.” Patiently–like someone cooked you a delicious meal. I’m not too proud, but I’m so proud of this record.” (sic)
Wentz added, “Our band has been an ongoing art project for twenty years and we know there were many foundational points along that journey. We wanted to create an album that would fuse those points together—something fresh yet sculpted from our foundation. Ramen & Elektra seemed like the perfect home for this.”
So Much (For) Stardust will be Fall Out Boy’s seventh studio album, their first since 2018’s Mania.
The record garnered mixed reviews and several three-star ratings. It peaked at number one on the UK Rock and Metal Albums charts, as well as the US Billboard 200.
