Michael Jackson biopic will ‘address’ abuse accusations | music | entertainment

This week it was announced that Michael Jackson will be getting his own biopic. The star – who passed away on June 25, 2009 – will join the likes of Freddie Mercury, Tina Turner and Whitney Houston with his own Hollywood film that tells the story of his life on the big screen. The film will be titled “Michael” and is set to be directed by American director Antoine Fuqua – but he won’t shy away from the most controversial moments of the star’s life.

In 2002, Jackson was charged with seven counts of child molestation and two counts of poisoning a minor with alcoholic beverages. After an extensive trial that lasted months, the star was acquitted of all charges.

Further accusations following the star’s death in 2009 were announced in the 2019 documentary, Leaving Neverland.

Michael will be co-created by the Jackson estate, as well as co-executors John Branca and John McClain. The film will also feature Graham King, who stars in the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Jackson’s estate had earlier denounced the accusations against the singer as nothing more than “the assassination of a popular figure” before insisting he was innocent.

Of the film, Fuqua said, “The first films of my career were music videos, and I still feel that the combination of film and music is a deep part of who I am. For me, there is no artist with the strength, charisma, and sheer musical genius of Michael Jackson. I was moved to make music videos by watching his work – the first black artist to be played in major rotation on MTV.”

Fuqua added, “His music and those images are part of my worldview, and the opportunity to tell his story on screen alongside his music was irresistible.”

Michael doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s slated to go into production this year.
